I have to say this is the most intuitive article I have read of track planning. Anyone with any sense at all would direct a newb to this article here.

Yeah, that's a cool site. I stumbled on it a week or two ago (I think from a link here, but maybe a web search).

Where did this guy get his costs and data? Lots of "facts", but they don't make sense, except perhaps as they apply to his personal modeling history.

I read it and it all makes sense to me. The facts I believe you are referring to is the cost per square. It has to be written somewhere, and it is a good point you bring up that facts should be sourced. Possibly it was done long ago.
