Ballast size

Hey group, Im getting to the ballast stage in my layout and Im wondering whether to use medium or fine. What are the rules for HO??

I use the medium. Fine would be more for N scale.

Rules? We don't need no stinkin rules! I use both, mixed together.

Use use both but not mixed. I'll first use the medium and then sprinkle a little fine on top. No real reason, I just think it looks a little better that way

for main lines i do as Glen but for sidings that see little use i use fine mixed in with dirt.

I use the fine, although I have used medium as a sub-ballast if the area required a bit of fill. Sidings get cinders, or cinders with dirt and weeds, or, in some cases, just dirt and weeds.
