Ballast Color ?

Any suggestions on what color mainline ballast [or combination of colors ] for a NYC transition era layout?

I'm looking at pics of the Water Level Route in my Don Ball "America's colorful railways" book and see light gray mixed with black or brown.....Central fans, any more opinions?
