    J & R, work in progress

Steamhead: Thanks for checking in. Sadly I've been not able to work on the J&R for a little while. Hopefully that will change as I get some time over the next few weeks. Next up is putting scenery in the logging area.

    Layout Ideas

Trainiac: Looks good. You must be skinnier than I am....those aisles are too small for me :-) You going to put a two-sided backdrop between modules 10 and 8? Looks like a 30" radius....that right?

    J & R, work in progress

I'm a software guy too. There are probably better tools (photoshop so you can layer?) but I don't have any of those. Powerpoint is my only drawing tool (and it is pretty limited, but at least I already have it). Transparency was a big help as it let me kind of have pseudo layers without...

    J & R, work in progress

planning scenery I'm planning the scenery for the logging part of the J&R. Attached below are some powerpoint drawings I've made to help me visualize what it will look like when it is done, and to help plan where to build supports, etc. My friend Patrick is an excellent modeler and will be...

Where do you get your Logging Stuff?

Cache Creek Models (E. J. Brannan) is back up and making models. I just received an order in the mail and they look great and just as good as some purchased a few years ago at a show. You can see pix of his stuff here.

    J & R, work in progress

Trainiac77: The J&R is a totally freelanced railroad. No prototype. I just like steam and logging....and given the space this is what made sense to me. Hope you are looking for a house with an appropriate train area :-).

    J & R, work in progress

Track plan Trainiac77: Below are a couple of sketches of the track plan (very rough, and those elevations are just approximations...I haven't measured them). One shows the visible track (black for mainline, red for mine train, green for logging switchbacks) and the other shows the hidden...

gallows turntable done Finished my gallows turntable, pix below. This is kind of a weird kitbash based on a model from Diamond (a plaster cast pit that included a more modern turntable than I wanted). I modeled the gallows turntable after one I found on the web. While building this, I...

    J & R, work in progress

More pics Here is what I've been working on lately. Finished major work on the switchback trestle (still tacked in place to allow scenery building) Base of turntable installed and operational Gallows turntable started, shown in test fitting Still to come on turntable are support...

    J & R, work in progress

Steamhead: Yeah, the trestle is scratchbuilt. I made one bent, then used styrene to create a jig, and used the jig to build the rest (pretty standard technique, I gather from googling around). The biggest problem I have is trying to make a realistic trestle over the 2 curved tracks. Not sure...

    J & R, work in progress

ok, ok, here's another tidbit OK, got it. Will post new stuff in this thread as it happens. The photo below shows a trestle being test fit. In the logging area of the J&R there is a series of switchbacks leading up to a logging head. One of those switchbacks isn't long enough without a...

    J & R, work in progress

The J & R is an HO logging and mining layout set in the early 1900's in the pacific northwest. A short video introduction is up on youtube. The layout is an L shape, 17 feet by 10 feet. Open benchwork, standard gauge. No scenery yet, as I'm still finishing the track (almost there though)...
