Hi Peter
This looks good , I worked on these beasts when I was on the flightline. They are big.
I have this model and have refrained from building her because of the size, and as you know I am not afraid of big models.
Again good job.
I used spray adhesive on the back of all canopy parts. That way I did not have to worry about smear of glue. I also use Quick Tack. White or clear formulas, Grabs fast and holds well. Experiment with it a bit. If you are in the states. You can get it at most craft stores. They sell a sample pack...
I glued this part directly to the fuselage and then fit the windscreen under it. That way the windscreen edge slips under the part and helps form the shape.
Leave the edge where the windscreen comes in loose with no glue and then slip the plastic under it. It should stay in place with no glue...
Engine Forming
Well I used a dowel rod about 6" long to form the paper around. I then used Quick Grab glue. Then I formed the top by applying a glob of glue under it and forming with tweezers to shape. I then slid it off the mandrel and set it aside to dry.
Engine
Thanks Madchuck
Engines are something you have to love to build , see my spitfire thread for this. I am glad you are at it again, just show that engine a little love and overlook the 27 cylinders:mrgreen: and it will go great for you. Thanks again,
Awards
It is with great humility that I accept your honor with not one but four trophies Peter.:mrgreen:
I wish to thank you for hanging around with so many posts to view for the end. All kidding aside it was a fun build and I am glad your are finding some room in your life for the...
Finished Model
Well Will I turned the props around . Thanks:thumb:
I have built a display base for the model to sit on. It is 16" square plywood with a paper concrete overlay spray mounted on. I has the title of the plane on all 4 sides and the logo from the Cleveland races glued onto black...
Props at last
Thanks Will the exhaust needed to be improved. I also patrol for items for mixed media, girlfriend hates it when I go into craft stores.
Well I completed the props and the rear wheel bay doors. I put my own spin on the props.. No pun inteneded.
Wheels on
Thanks Will I will take another look at that.
Well I got the wheels on and added a brake line detail. I have changed the exhaust pipes on the side of the fuselage. A few more items and a stand and then I will shoot the finish photos..
Bones and wings
Thanks Chris. Vacuum forming tutorials everywhere you look, but just get the jest of it, then wing it.
Here is the glue up of the bones for the wings. I applied the skins to the bones and will form wing tips after this all dries up, getting harder and harder to handle without...
Canopies
Thanks for the kind words Peter. I have seen a lot of builders who put me to shame, but I do enjoy the work..
Here is the canopy. I cut out the pattern and just could not bring myself to build this with a glued together pattern. So I taped it up and glued it a piece of carboard and...
Inboard landing wings revision
Willj:cool:
Send it on I am going to build it again. I have learned a few things about this plane and think I can do a better job on round two. Will probably only post finished pictures and interesting parts of round two though.
Wire Hinge
I used a diamond file to rough the wire and then used ca to attach. I use gel based ca, the rough surface gives it a bit of tooth which helps it stay put.
