    Mountain Structure??

WOW! did you just say EIGHT FEET? forget all the usual methods, if you're building floor to ceiling mountains you'll need a dedicated structure for them. If that was a typo though, I suppose layed foam would work about as well as plywood ribs.

ways to model bad track for slow speeds

dinking rails, huh? I may have to do a touch of that to all my mainline.

    Mountain Structure??

well, that was quick. How big of a mountain are you talking about anyhow? My prefered method (aluminum screening over plywood ribs) works great for large stuff, but crumpled paper or styrafoam would probrably be better for smaller areas.

    Car Hits House.

Well, the downside is the insurance company can't really compensate you for the time involved in the layout. But on the other hand, most of the damage to the house doesn't look to bad. Especially not for a house that was just struck by a moving vehicle.

    Rail work mishap.

by bonding it all in place, are you referring to the watered down glue mixture I've heard about? and yeah, that probrably would've been less risky. Anyhow, my turnout is fine, but the switch actuator seems to be toasted. No real hassel to replace just that though.

    Rail work mishap.

well, the good news is I can definately run trains over the area. (And that little derailing problem seems to have cleared up!) The bad news is, I'm pretty sure that switch is trashed. I can flip it manually, but not remotely. Since it's at the back of a 5' layout, manually isn't much of an...

    Rail work mishap.

Oh boy, did I just screw up! I've had a gap in the trackbed at the back of my layout for a while. Right where the track leaves a turnout on the outside mainline and starts heading up the mountain, my trackbed was flawed. I wound up with a gap about 2-3 inches long, and at least half an inch...

ways to model bad track for slow speeds

I'd say to bevel your roadbed slightly before laying it. Just make sure it's a REALLY slight bevel, because the effect will exagerate itself with running trains.

    Coaling tower

I was asked to elaborate on the coaling tower on my railroad. Okay, thats enough reason to brag, although most of the story behind it falls more under "lessons-learned". better view of upper tower... First, I needed a good prototype. So I started digging through some archives. In "photo album...

    Photo Fun Week of 06/09/07

sure, but I'm putting it in the N/Z scale forum, cause I seem to have deleted all of the 'work in progress' pictures.

    Real or Fake?

and before I'm subjected to reading pages 2 and three... #3 I took for being real, though at an amusment park or something. (very large model, is that a viable guess?) #4 took a double take, followed by awed staring. #7 better be real! The telegraph posts and some of the soil looks just a bit...

    Photo Fun Week of 06/09/07

I don't like the appearance of the X's, but for that very reason I say keep them. Unless you're a high end passenger run, trains aren't really meant to be pretty. (Those locos most of all!) Of course, when the IC expieremented with electro-optical sensors and painted barcodes, they soon began...

    Landscaping and Stuff?

Hi Gang few questions on landscaping and stuff ....... 1- with my inclined roadbed...can it be put on a 2" foamboard if it is supported enough?.....will it be strong enough?.....or stick with wood?..(panel)hmm, my usual method of terrain had a few... discrepancies on my last build. A foam...

To keep or to leave behind?

Taking a jigsaw to it isn't a practicle answer, due to the way the original framework is laid out. However, the question now seems moot, as I won't be moving before next March. And then, quite likely, to Japan.

    Most Expensive Locomotives

My USRA 2-6-6-2. I think I've spent about $300 on it, although prices seem to be dropping. I don't think I really need one of those thousand dollar locos I've seen on some websites.

To keep or to leave behind?

Thanks! Like I said, I'm already pretty much of the inclination to start over, but you brought up several points I hadn't thought of before, as well as tips that may be useful at some future date. Let's see, my layout is based on an amount of extra space I had when I got the house... which...

To keep or to leave behind?

After three years, I've finally made enough progress that my model railroad looks fairly decent. And after three years at one duty station, it's about time for me to negotiate orders and move to my next duty station. Which raises the question about my layout, do I try to pack it up, accept...

    Considering a new switcher

good to hear the 2-8-0 crosses switches nicely, that's my biggest concern really. As for pulling power, the 0-6-0 never lacked that! It'll pull all day long, with no problems till it looses electrical contact over a switch or something. The only thing I've got that'll outpull it is my...

    A Short N Scale Vid

Nice, that lower speed really helps improve the appearance. Other than passenger or the occasional high-ball, I've never seen trains really moving like they were in the first vid.

    New layout in the works.

congratz, you've finally gotten to the point where it's no longer just a paper dream, you're actually starting to get something in there now! (most of my projects die as paper dreams...)
