A major purchase for the SSR.

Now the fun begins!! The purchase came in today and I got a better deal than I thought. Now I have to separate the wheat from the chaff. Lots of passenger stuff which I will move. Some Amtrak, some Pennsy and some western roads. About 15 or 20 locos, ranging from NIB to runners to fixers...

A major purchase for the SSR.

Hello everyone! Have not posted here in quite some time. Lots going on. I have recently added another 15 feet of track. Had to oversome obsticles ie a sink, washer and dryer. The new track will enlarge my layout to run the entire lenght of the basement. I am going to have to block the...

What type of road bed do you use?

I got into the hobby with the LL click track. After about 18 months and 1k , I got frustrated and swapped to EZ track. While I was making the switch, I went from steel to nickel silver. My layout is currently 14x24 and growing!

    Springfield Southern site

Have not posted here in a bit. The fuel crunch put the hurt on fuding for the railroad. Free time has been taken by the need to demolish a 2 car garage that had the roof cave in. Just finished the first site for the SSR. There are a few pictures with the track shots being from the last...

    Atlas automobiles

Spent this week's RR $$ on 2 Ford Fairmont wagons and a 55 Chevy. The 55 is a Malibu CLassics. Atlas quality may be good on their trains, but their vehicles are lacking. Both the vehicles are made in China. The headlights on the Fords were not even painted and the were over twice the price of...

The original Springfield Southern is no more

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Guess I have some work to do. I always put the RR on the bottom of the $$ list. Have to domove it down the priority list too.

    50' boxcars with RS-3 and GP7/9 ?

That is one of the beauties of this hobby. We freelancers can choose our own way. After setting my general location and time period, I decided that I liked the locomotives from Buffalo better than GEs or EMDs. Come to find out that the locos fit my time period, although most were on their...

The original Springfield Southern is no more

My wife and I had an argument yesturday. She made a threat to do some serious damage to my layout. Rather than risk losing a substancial investment in track and equipment, I chose to breakdown and box everything I could. The argument ended and I found myself with a several boxes of track and...

    Running trains versus scenery

For me the real run is running trains! Without the ability to run, I would quickly lose interest, especially when the $$ gets tight, like it is right now. Even though, at 14x25, my layout is not small, it is realitively simple. I run on a DC upgraded pack, no blocks and manual use of switches...

    Progress on the SSR

Have not posted in a while. $$$ have dried up so I have been doing some cheap projects. A wrecked Atlas RS3 has now been converted to a dummy. Am thinking about going slug with it, but I do not think that any New England roads would have used them. The RS3 in question is a Vermont unit...

Where are the Great Young Model Railroaders?

I am in my 50s. Model railroading was a dream for me. Something I planned on doing when we bought this place. I started playing with the Life Like track shortly after we moved in, but was fixated with NASCAR. At one point I was a national internet columnist with a second teir site. Toyota...

Converting a powered unit to a dummy

Thanks for the help guys! That is what I like about this place, a novice like me can ask questions and not be out of place.

Converting a powered unit to a dummy

I have an Atlas RS3 that was damaged beyond repair. The loco hit the floor demolishing the engine mounts etc. My LHS extimated the repair at over $50, which is too high for me, considering I have a number of RS3s. I can restore the appearance and after removing the motor, find that the...

    Progeress on the SSR

Ssr Hey Guys! Funds are limited! A digital camera costs $$ that I would rather put into track, scenery and rolling stock. Once a 1/4, I promise to buy a single use film camera and do some photos. Ordered some Proto 1000 50ft box cars in PC colors. Got two in today. Not bad for the price...

    Progeress on the SSR

Work continiues on the Springfield Southern. The center area is now paved in concrete. Painted styrene over the cork. A tower has been added to handle the Crystal Lake spurs and another is under construction for the Palmer yard. One more tower will be built to service the Ames ridge spurs...

    Bachmann diesels...good deal?

I have about a dozen or so diesels on the SSR. A mix of Bachmanns, Atlas and Atherns. I try to keep my price point under $100. The two Bachmanns in the fleet are okay. The only cheaper locos i plan on avoiding are Model Power and Life Likes. Model power does not care about being proto...

    Where's Your Layout?

I started with a simple 4x8. Got the idea that bigger would be better. It becaame 2 11x15 sections with liftouts. took over a room in the basement. Moved the computer, work table and book case. After a track switch, I ended up with a 14x25 layout that takes up 1/3rd of the basement. The...

How much rolling stock is too much?

Right now on the mighty SSR, there is enough rolling stock to fill about 50% of the spur and yard space. I am comfortable with that since I am on DC with no blocks and run one train at a time. I was wondering if there were any guidelines as to how much should be on the layout at any time? I...

    Building my first structures

Just built my first IHC kit. The Colonial church, a bit more complex than some of the other structures, but still a good build for a novice like me!!

Amherst Railway Society Railroad Hobby Show

Did not make it this year myself. I live in the area. Too much work and not enough $$$! Do ay members of this list live in the Springfield area? I am getting tired of the Lone wolf syndrome and the Amherst club is too big for me. John
