11-01 Take 'em out? Do your models leave home?

I'm the only person I know that's in this hobby, so the fleet has nowhere else to go!

To Solder Track Joints Or Not To Solder?

LOL, I don't think you'll have much problem with expansion in AZ since it's always 192 degrees with a relative humidity of 0%!

To Solder Track Joints Or Not To Solder?

I've only got a small N-Scale (Code 80) door layout with maybe 35' of track. So I'm not too worried about rail expansion. Regardless, I soldered every single joint, and I've run feeders to every block as well as on either side of every (non power-routing) turnout. Basically, I don't have any...

    Nice eBay win

I had a similar eBay experience in the summer...I won a brand-new LifeLike GP-38 for $9 from an estate auction. A couple of weeks later I sent an email asking for an ETA. I got a response telling me that the loco must've accidentally been taken to be sold at a live auction. I got a refund...

    Wednesday 10-25; What’s On Your Bench/Layout?

Most of the layout is now masked off for eventual track painting, (If it would stop raining!) but sitting on the layout would be a half-assembled DPM kit, and a bunch of shiny, newly acquired capacitors taken from some junked pc boards that seem to be tailor-made to become the innards of a...

    loggin' on the rails...

This is one of my favorite model railroads. It's an N-Scale 1930's logging layout built by a gentleman in France. Very compact, but very busy and detailed. I'm always amazed when people across the pond build a North American style layout, given the difficulty or expense of acquiring NA...

    An Apology.

Freedom of speech doesn't really mean much if there is an asterisk beside it. Society presents such a double standard in the way it preaches "say what you want....but check with these people, and these people, and these people first, and when you say it, don't use this word, or this word, or...

    10/21 Derailment outside of Pittsburgh

That is probably the first big news event in my life that I remember clearly. I vividly remember the picture of the fiery wreck on the front cover of the Sun....it kind of put a damper on my blossoming train obsession as I recall. It's simply amazing that there were no injuries.

    Styrofoam Cookie Cutter Layout??

You shouldn't have any problems going with foam. A 3x6 piece of 1" pink or blue foam attached to a frame of 1x2's and using WS risers for the grades would be ultra-light and pretty strong. I'm guessing about 10-15 lbs or so.

Life Like GP18 is so smoooooth

I second that! A lot of people knock the older lifelike stuff, but to be honest, my gp18 runs sweeter than the newer split-frame LL gp20 I have. The detail is supurb too. And it was $15 brand-new off eBay!

    First Loco Weathering/Detailing

Looks pretty good. The rust is perfect! The only other thing I would suggest is to 'grime-it-up' a little more with a wash of heavily diluted india ink.

    Wonder what scale these are???

I think the louver configuration on the CN unit is off. Also, I believe #2003 actually had dynamic brakes. And where are the lift rings????;)

    Industry ideas

Wow, so many ideas, brakie. I guess I was thinking too hard, overlooking all the simple type industries. Skammer, I like how all of your industries tie into each other. If I had more space, I could do the same! Colton_modeler, I'm really intrigued by that mill...I like the idea of...

N Scale vs HO Scale Engines etc...?

I don't thinkg that there is really anything to stop you from making an N-Scale layout every bit as good as HO.. A lot of people say that product availabilty isn't good in N, but I think that's a 30-year old misconception. I'd say over the last 15 years, and especially the last 5-10, that N...

    Other hobbies

I used to do the whole baseball card thing till I got bored of it and sold everything. Right now my secondary hobby would be videography. Hopefully not too far down the road I can turn that into a living, or at least a side business. If I lived in a perfect world, I guess I would be a...

    Blue/Pink and white polystyrene?

The blue and pink stuff is the best because it's solid and strong, whereas the white stuff is beady and VERY messy and brittle. I don't see why you couldn't use it though. As for the pink/blue availability in Cali, I couldn't answer you on that one. I'm in the cold white North, so there...

    Industry ideas

I kinda like the "undefined manufacturer" concept..... Either way, here is what I have to work with. The 2 tracks at the back will be hidden for staging/continuous running, the interchange and team tracks are at the bottom right, and the 3 industrial sidings in the middle. I'm now thinking...

    Industry ideas

Well, I already have a both a team track and interchange designated, so that'll give me some variety there. I had thought about making the other industries related to the brewery, but they would be just too close for my liking, even with selective compression. My time frame is roughly...
