    Switching layout ideas needed!

Hi guys, First of all, this is pretty much my first posting on Zealot in a long while. I left when The Gauge became Zealot, and pretty much left the hobby too. So it's good to be back! Basically I'm going to be selling the majority of my locomotive collection, and will start again...

So, what does your wife think?

My girlfriend and I are moving into a new house next month (hopefully!) and we went to view it today. There's a well kept lean-to shed out back, her first comment on it being "somewhere for your models". She's always been accepting of my hobby, I think she sees that there is a positive...

    Re gauging Grandt

It would be really difficult to reposition the domes on the bachmann model because the bases of the domes are cast on to the metal boiler. If you wanted to move them you'd have to grind them off.

    Re gauging Grandt

I did actually find the thread where you mentioned using the 2-8-0's chassis as a basis for the deutz HF 130c. Having dismantled the bachmann model myself I can tell you that bashing it into a diesel will just trash a perfectly good model. If it's an outside framed chassis you want it's simple...

Examining the New Bachmann On30 Outside Frame 4-4-0

I saw a comment that made me chuckle on another forum recently, can't remember which one. They were reviewing this specific locomotive and someone said "Whoever heard of an outside frame 4-4-0?". LOL. Some people can be so delightfully ignorant. I'm really pleased bachmann chose to model this...

Examining the New Bachmann On30 Outside Frame 4-4-0

Beautiful model. Period. If you disagree, then you are wrong.

    Re gauging Grandt

Meh. I see nothing wrong with the performance of the bachmann porter as it is. Nice slow, smooth running loco once it's run in, even if the motor is a little loud by "modern" standards. I've never heard any complaints and I've seen plenty at exhibitions. I'm quite happy with mine. My outside...

    corrugated iron sheet

Generally speaking if you just keep the sheets to about 6 foot by 3 foot nobody will question it. I don't doubt that in Cuba they use whatever sheets they can get!

    corrugated iron sheet

I spent a long time researching some corrugated iron and asbestos buildings nearby for a prototype layout that I was going to build. The buildings ranged from early 1930s to late 70s. I measured a bunch of the sheets to figure out what materials I'd need to buy to scratchbuild them. You can buy...

    Re gauging Grandt

FYI It's pretty easy to convert the bachmann on30 porters to side tanked and tendered versions. There are all sorts of conversion kits available. There's even a very helpful article on the internet about dismantling the porter. Just google it. So you CAN have your cake and eat it if you want...

    Why?

I model in 1:43 (british O scale) which gives us 7mm to the foot. That makes HO track 2 foot 4 inches (or 28inch gauge). The difference between that and true 2 foot gauge is a mere 2.5 mm, or 1.25mm either side - which makes me wonder, is it even visible, and even if it was, is it really...

    My latest project

Looks pretty good, grewsome. Cereal boxes are indeed perfect for model railroad structures, I gotta say it's a brilliant "free" material, and I use it for a lot of my structures, especially "crooked" and "abandoned" buildings. One thing it's fantastic for is slate roofs. Not that you guys have a...

    Small HOn30 layout

I take it from your name and avatar that you have a healthy interest in Simplex locomotives. Ever (scratch)built one? I'm in the process of making a couple, time permitting. If you'd be interested I might post a few pics.

    Bachmann 2-8-0

So much for "it can't be done" eh? ;) After seeing this I might just get myself one. You've made it look much better with your modifications. :) Very good job!

    HO/HOn3 conversion

There's no such thing as "cheap" when it comes to investments. There's only "good" and "bad". Invest your money poorly and you get poor results. Probably why a lot of these railways either regauge, shut down, or wish they'd started with standard gauge.

    HO/HOn3 conversion

A lot of people seem to think this, but it's actually not got a lot of truth to it. Most narrow gauge equipment doesn't have much more track overhang than standard gauge does. Don't forget that in most cases the locomotives and equipment are proportionally smaller. American diesels exported as...

On3 vs On30...where do you get track?

I'm so so sure that I've seen a swiss prototype somewhere. Maybe not Roco but somewhere.

On3 vs On30...where do you get track?

I see... I believe they did at one point have a very similar locomotive (in fact possibly the same model) in the red SBB livery. I'm sure I've seen it on ebay before.

    another photo

When you go back that far you see more parallels between American and British locomotive design. That vertical boiler locomotive for instance is clearly based on the Welsh DeWinton design.
