    Free Mo N.

Free-mo was adapted from FREMO, I think around 1994. The FREMO modular standard predates DCC and somewhere I have a set of FREMO cab control standards (in German) dated 1988. The same wiring should be able to use Digitrax, NCE or Lenz. But only one at a time. :) Cheers David

    Free Mo N.

Partially correct. It is the N scale equivalent of Free-mo but there is no standard size module (unlike NTRAK). It is a truly free form modular system where modules can be any size or shape you like. Can be single or multiple line and tracks don't have to be down the middle. The only hard and...

Light Rail trains in N scale

You might try the NCat group. They promote (mainly US outline) N scale electric traction with live catanery. Cheers David

    Free Mo N.

The N scale club I belong to uses AusTrak, an Australianised and metric variant of NTRAK with only 2 main lines laid with Peco code 80. It has similar limitations to NTRAK with fixed length modules and mainly "roundy roundy" operation. A subset of the club want to do something in finer scale...

    Base for buildings?

The modules owned by our club were left with a vacant "footprint" of essentially flat roadway where buildings are intended to go. If absolutely necessary they can be exhibited without buildings. But the idea was so members could build whatever they want to sit on that space. In many cases home...

    Let's Talk Couplers

That really surprises me. I've never had any trouble fitting a 1015 into the LL coupler pocket. It's usually less than 10 min to convert an SW8/9 or SD7, including assembling the couplers. I did four SD7s in a little over half an hour the night before an exhibition. The longest LL conversion...

    N Scale Atlas GP-7

You could always imagine PRR trialled the demonstrator in 1949. Cheers David

    Container crane

I don't think there are any dockside container cranes available commercially in any scale. The one on the Chase Marine Terminal NTRAK module was scratchbuilt. However the crane that loads the ship isn't always the same one that unloads the train. Trains can be unloaded some distance from the...

Do you know what we need?

I'd like the SD70M-2 and SD70ACe demonstrators. Don't forget an Aussie SD70ACe has been running on US metals. Cheers David

    South Eastern Railroad in Sweden

You don't have to but the slide switch does the job of the spring anyway. It is easier to take the spring out before you lay the track. This will help if you ever want to replace the rods with, say, Tortoise point motors. Cheers David

    South Eastern Railroad in Sweden

Looks like they are electrofrog, so this is a good way. http://www.nscale.net/PNphpBB2-viewtopic-t-2987.html Personally I don't think the triangular piece is necessary and you put the push/pull rod straight onto the switch, but try both and see what works best for you. A good alternative I've...

I need a name for my layout

Denmark actually. Well technically Schleswig-Holstein which was either Danish or German depending on whose army was occupying at the time. :) Cheers David

    Bachmann EZ Command

I would recommend the NCE PowerCab as a starter set. It's not that much more than the Bachmann system, but has many more features and you don't have to throw it away when you're ready to upgrade. It's upwardly compatible with the ProCab. Cheers David

    New Member says Hi.

Main line steam disappeared in the 1960s. A few pockets of steam survived on freight a bit longer, notably around Broadmeadow in NSW which had the giant AD60 garratts in service until 1973. In Victoria a few survived as workshops pilots until 1979. The last bastion was the South Maitland Railway...

I need a name for my layout

Parts of Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania along the Delaware River were originally called Nya Sverige (New Sweden). The Delaware River itself was originally called the Swenskes Revier. Essington was originally called Nya Göteborg and Salem was Nya Elfsborg. A layout depicting a fictional...

    Intermodal yard

Walthers Translift intermodal crane http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/933-3222 Vollmer container crane http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/770-7905 Both are static. There are operational container cranes but they cost a small fortune. :) Cheers David

    Intermodal yard

Yes, two Walthers Translift intermodal cranes have been superdetailed for the yard. Etched brass ladders, mesh catwalks, etc. This is when the yard and cranes were still under construction. The yard is just a bit too narrow for two mobile cranes to operate, so the yard may get a Vollmer...

    Intermodal yard

A single large sheet of MDF sitting around the tracks up to just below rail height. The MDF is sitting on thin cork to build it up to the correct height. Plaster over the actual track. Same level as the MDF outside the rails and a bit lower inside. Before it set, a 1970s vintage car with old...
