Brand New Steam Loco Now Operational

That's interesting, Triplex - I was unaware that many locomotives (excepting the Allegheny) exceeded 75,000 lbs or so per axle, let alone 80K. Thanks for that data point. NKP, have you read the book on Lima (forget the name now - I'd borrowed if from my father) that had a section that dealt...

Eastern Tn logging on the DG CC & W RR 1928

Thanks for the replies. Re: the #2 pencil, this may be just what I'm looking for. I haven't been happy with paint colors I've used in this area, so this represents a good second (and close to prototypical!) solution. Re: the Dullcote, the can I was using was unopened before I sprayed my test...

Eastern Tn logging on the DG CC & W RR 1928

Bill, I looked back through your thread, but couldn't find a reference to how "the #2 pencil graphite job" was applied. Is it too simple to assume that you simply "color" the smokebox with a pencil? Also, regarding the dullcoat, is it typical to have good and bad cans? I sprayed a test car...

N&W CF Caboose - AMB (IMAGE HEAVY!)

Exactly! sign1 I believe I'll leave the bottoms removable on this pair as well so that I can make internal changes if needed. Thanks for the comment! Matt

Funny that you should post that as I've in fact recently started them. I'll post again when they're finished - if experience is any guide, I'll see you in a year... Matt

    Eastern Car Works Passenger Cars

I've used Eastern Car Works truck kits for the N&W CF caboose I built. Decent detail, assembly engineering was ok. Not what you're looking for re the car kits, but Id wager overall build quality is similar Plus, at least now you have one response! Matt

It's a little too quiet in here.

I suspect it'll take a bit before people stop scratching their heads about the recent changes and a new baseline of traffic is set. Matt

kmorris, steamhead, thanks for the comments. I can't take credit for the family project idea - that was my dad's - but I agree it was a good one! My son has sent built his as well. nkp, good information. I'm a big massive viaduct fan. I'll have to check that out.

N&W CF Caboose - AMB (IMAGE HEAVY!)

Thanks for the comment ocali. I will definitely be weathering the model, but don't have any immediate plans for it. I tend to work on things as the spirit moves me - i.e. it may be this weekend or years from now! Matt

Rolling stock update (with LOTS of BIG pictures)...

I found a reference. A 70 ton ARA offset-side design was created in 1926 (MUCH earlier than I had thought) with a 50 ton design following in 1930. 127,000 of a 1934 redesign of the 50T were built through the 1950's. I couldn't find a date for the panel side, but the context indicated 1920's...

Rolling stock update (with LOTS of BIG pictures)...

That's helpful. I'm also targeting, coincidentally, the same time frame (1936ish) - so this is good to know. Thanks!

Rolling stock update (with LOTS of BIG pictures)...

Doctorwayne, Thanks for posting these - one inspiration I've gotten from reading these types of posts is to keep more detail "stuff" on hand. A model being built is much more likely to be built right if the stuff is here as opposed to on a shelf at the LHS! (at least in my world) Question...

    Is it possible...

doctorwayne, It appears you airbrush with couplers still in pockets. I would think paint getting into the pockets would cause functional problems. Do you have to do any post-painting work to make sure the couplers swing freely? I have one stamped metal Varney that may be about the same...

N&W CF Caboose - AMB (IMAGE HEAVY!)

This is an excellent idea. My template accomplishes the same thing, other than it is not on the car at the time of applying the decal. Apply decal, overlay template to check ends / level, adjust decal, overlay template again, etc. The tape would be an on-the-car reference, and may also help...

N&W CF Caboose - AMB (IMAGE HEAVY!)

I finally got around to decaling this model. The delay has something to do with life, and a lot to do with worrying about screwing it up! I don't believe I've done any decaling since I was building plastic funny car models in the 1970's! In any case, it worked out well; the good side is...

    Digitrax or NCE?

gcrawford, I know you question wasn't intended for me, but I'll pitch in a couple thoughts anyway... I have the Pro-cab, which allows you to build a bigger "stack" of recallable addresses (8, I believe - not sure that this is possible with PowerCab). After experimenting with this, I went back...

    Frustrations with KATO grab irons

IMO, a very useful modeling tool is a dial caliper. In this case, you could use one to measure the grab diameter, which would answer the drill bit size question. You can find them here and there relatively inexpensively - examples...
