The old 32 to 40 foot wood and steel reefers

Thanks, Frank. :) The colours do seem a little too vibrant in that photo and perhaps a little bit "off", too. I didn't weather the car too heavily, as it represents one re-built in late 1936, very close to my late '30s modelling era. ;-) Wayne

Diorama finishing – keep from having the wet look

In the last photo above, only the ground cover between the edge of the layout and the closest track was added in the session shown - the ballast and other ground cover was done several years earlier. If your ballast, etc. looks wet, chances are that you didn't apply sufficient "wet" water...

Diorama finishing – keep from having the wet look

First, apply and arrange all of your ground cover (ground foam, ballast, dirt, whatever - use at least 2 or 3 different shades of ground foam, unless you're creating a lawn or field of a single crop. Even then, adding a little lighter coloured material atop the darker stuff will impart "sunlit"...

The old 32 to 40 foot wood and steel reefers

Unless something has changed recently, there's no limit on the number of pictures which you may post, and no limit on the length of a thread, either. This forum has always been very "picture friendly". Wayne

The old 32 to 40 foot wood and steel reefers

That car (in the old photo) with the three hatches may not even be a reefer. You'll note that the hatches are hinged so that they open from the side of the car - this was a common practice on boxcars that were used primarily for bulk loading, much like an early form of covered hopper. These...

The old 32 to 40 foot wood and steel reefers

Yeah, it does look like it, but I'd guess that it's simply the edge of the background colour of the logo. Wayne

    Steel mill modellers...

I think that the coke retort is what's otherwise known as a by-products plant. The gases driven off during the coking process are collected, then refined in various ways to separate the many components, which include benzene, ammonia, and light oil. In many plants, the coke gas is also used as...

advice on styrene wraps to add rivet detail

I think that a styrene wrap is very similar to a mink or sable wrap, but with less fur. ;)sign1 Probably the same as a styrene wrapper (not to be confused with a styrene rapper, which may possibly be available from Preiser) I've read that the rivet decals are somewhat three-dimensional, but a...

The Athearn Mikado re-build thread, with photos, can be seen HERE. EDIT: Michael, I couldn't find a link, but I believe Ray has a website with more info and photos. You could also contact him via PM, on the MR site. I'm sure he would appreciate seeing some of your work, too. He provided me...

Sorry about those missing pictures - this is a Forum issue, as I've replaced those pictures several times. I notice a lot of other photos from my threads are missing, too. :curse: If you can be patient, I will attempt to replicate that entire thread, with all photos restored, elsewhere, then...

Michael, Ray Breyer did a very nice NKP Mike over on the Model railroader site. Here's a photo: http://www.trainboard.com/railimages/data/510/NKP_587_18_.JPG I did a search, but got way too many possibilities - he models NKP and his user name there is orsonroy, if you want to do your own...

    Dan's Layout

You're right about planning being important, but for every modeller that doesn't plan adequately (and ends-up with a layout that's less than satisfactory) there's a would-be modeller that plans too much (and ends-up with no layout). ;):-D I had a trackplan when I started building my current...

    Using Floquil paint

I've been using lacquer thinner for Floquil paints for almost 50 years. It also works as a thinner for Testors Dullcote, Glosscote, Model Masters paint, Pactra, Humbrol, SMP Accupaint and Scalecoat. It's also a great cement for styrene. Wear a two-stage respirator when airbrushing with any of...

    Is it possible...

Here's the Varney tank car of which I spoke earlier. The SSMX reporting marks are from an Official Railway Equipment Register, and are for the National Molasses Company, while the name is a made-up combination to honour a dear, departed friend. The car's number is one digit above the last car...
