    Bashing a church

That's one heck of a silk purse, even if you put on a roof and stopped there. Great job converting a classic plasticville kit into something special.

    Newbie -- model builder program

Shouldn't that be: http://clevermodels.squarespace.com/freebies/ ? Nice work on the tower tutorial. If I hadn't just scratchbuilt one (from cardstock no less!) I'd download yours. Here's the thread: http://www.the-gauge.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=805 The other structure I started...

    Newbie -- model builder program

Micro-mark generally runs good deals on a box of 100 #11 blades. IIRC, I think they're Excel blades, actually. I can attest to what the guys are saying about wearing down the blades. My first scratchbuild with cardstock was a house based on company housing in WVA. I did not even know about...

N&W CF Caboose - AMB (IMAGE HEAVY!)

Nice work! You should feel proud of this accomplishment, taking an already nice kit to the next level and then some! (Anotha Notch, as Emeril says) Next...Weathering?

Awesome thread! I can't wait to see the dam pictures. (Somebody had to bite!)

    Micro-Mark's Car Routing System

Thanks for the review, Allan. I've been thinking about getting one of those for a few years now but have always found something else on which to spend my limited hobby dollars. I will bump this product up on the wish list.

    Kemtron USRA Mikado?

Perhaps in the course of modification, adding details and whatnot, the Mantua name got ground off? Such is the case with my Shifter. At any rate, the Mantua name was cast on the underside of the boiler just behind the smokebox. Not sure if that's the standard spot for all their engines...

Bowser USRA Lt Mikado, Deluxe Kit (Lord help me)

I turn to the Gauge frequently for advice and to share projects, but you may also find some kindred steam-spirits here: Yardbird Trains It's a Yahoo group so you'll need to join it. Any unanswered questions here can also be shared there for a bit more help (and vice versa!) Looking...

    Is it possible...

I think the Model Power metal stuff is a re-issue of Mantua...they have re-issued the Mantua Logger and 0-6-0 engines along with some rolling stock. Not 100% sure the car in the link is one of them, however. Wayne - Great work! There's an old Athearn 50' Round Roof box car in my pile of...

    layout "contest"

I don't want to hijack the thread, but yes, Russ, we will be looking for a house. We were looking at big box cookie cutter houses in a new development (not seriously, just for funsies) and I tell you, I'd be happy using one of the walk-in closets in those huge homes. Most likely I'll be...

    layout "contest"

Punny is funny right now, thanks for the lift! It has been a wild and crazy week so I've not pulled out the planning supplies. I have been looking back through the Iain Rice planning books I've got...one for selfish reasons, there's a great plan in the Mid-sized and Managable book that would...

    layout "contest"

Yes, by all means, as much as is possible, plan for the future space and build part of that plan in the space you have. Look at it this way: You build a compromise layout you may not be all that happy with, only to tear it out once the space becomes available. But let's say you build part...

Keep enjoying that camera, because I'm certainly enjoying the pictures! Can you tell us more about how you weather your lokies?

time to get started on a new layout

Kevin - don't despair! So many projects stay on the workbench for years (I should know, I've been working on my Shifter for over 4 years now!) and never seem to go anywhere and THAT'S OKAY! I go back and look at photos from when I started and that makes me feel better and worse at the same...

Maine style garage in HO scale

Great job! A nice little building with loads of character! www.scalescenes.com is a great place for paper. You pay and then download, so it's a pretty quick sale. I have built their little brick building (see thread here) but there's so much more you can download from their scratchbuilder's...

    What to paint what?!?

A neat tip I read somewhere for painting the windows & trim on DPM buildings is to use a chisel tip or fine tip paint pen or paint marker from craft stores. I've never tried it but thought I'd share anyway. Please let us see your finished product when you get there. I personally like an...

    layout "contest"

What about this: The bulk of the layout is along one long side, as you described. Built in to your shelving on the other side of the room is a staging area the full length of the room. At each end there's a removable bridge. It can be just a single track on a plank with some lath on the...

    HO Scale Injection Molding Equipment

Legos! Yes! I've still got mine, plus some that came with the house, and when my oldest son is a couple years older I'll start him on them. I learned so much about spatial geometry, layout & design, componant building, and much more from building with those things. I'm not sure I'd ever use...
