For anyone interested, here's a link to Porter diasassembly: http://www.lillines.ted-hawkins.com/bmannporter.html I found an 0-4-2 decoder-install tutorial here: http://www.railroad-line.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=27387 0-4-0 here...

    B'mann Porter disassembly/decoder install?

Hi all - What's the proper sequence to diassemble the 0-4-0 w/o breaking anything? Is the 0-4-2 the same? Has anyone installed a decoder in these? Tips, tricks, advise? TIA. regards,

    Kemtron USRA Mikado?

Actually, I'm not sure what alloy this is, but it does have the FWH, like the Mantua/Tyco. It isn't like any pix I found of Varney, Penn Line, Bowser or Cary. But Mantua had variations over the years - maybe others too. I stripped the paint to be sure nothing was hiding underneath, and found...

    Kemtron USRA Mikado?

And the winner is: Mantua - tho' maybe a Tyco version, since it doesn't have the name on it. Studying more pix, I'm now confident it's just been reworked a little. Thanks for all the input, everyone - I haven't been this interested in a Mantua since my first one 30 years ago! regards,

    Kemtron USRA Mikado?

Rest assured I'm not wanting a fuss. I have no vested interest in it being a Kemtron, I'd just like to find out who did made it. And I agree that Mantua is the most likely culprit, w/help from a previous owner. I simply doubt Mantua at this point, and it's within the realm of possibility for...

    Kemtron USRA Mikado?

This one also has no cast-in throttle assembly. I'll agree any of them could be filed or ground off, but that visibly changes the surface - and I don't accept that someone could do so w/o distorting any boiler bands or the sandbox sidecover, & then reproduce the original surface finish to the...

    Kemtron USRA Mikado?

Hi cnj - You may well be right - examination of the Pacific boiler pix shows a very close similarity. Enough so that there could have been mods to it to produce what I have. Not to belabor the point, but has anyone ever seen a Mantua w/no name on it, tho'?

    Kemtron USRA Mikado?

My apologies for the quality - cheep camera. Best detail I could get. Google/AlltheWeb search didn't have mention of an Arbour Mikado, but 0-4-0, 4-6-0, 2-8-4 & the Allegheny, so a Mike seems plausible. Hope this helps. regards,

BTW - Not Bowser either - diff boiler details.

    Kemtron USRA Mikado?

Hi nkp - I've not heard of Arbour - a quick search shows bought by Bowser (no date, but fairly old stuff?), mixed quality reviews, exorbitant prices on original kits apparently ($3 & $400 for Allegheny!). No ref to a Mike kit, but seems a likely candidate. Think a pic of their boiler'd...

    Kemtron USRA Mikado?

Hi pg&w - But don't all Mantuas have the name cast into frame, boiler or tender? "23" is the only marking on this, cast into the inside top of the boiler. The drawbar is plastic w/Kemtron cast on one side, "S" (short?) on the other. Tho' the frame/motor is similar to the 3rd series Mantua Mike...

    Kemtron USRA Mikado?

I've been given what I thought to be an undecorated Mantua Mike, w/a few superdetail parts, but the only name I find is Kemtron, on the drawbar. It's whitemetal, Pittman-style motor mounted center-frame, plastic cab w/hinged brass tender plate, separate handrails/posts, plastic spring & brake...

How to strip paint from an Athearn wide vision caboose?

Soaking in automotive brake fluid will strip many paints. May take more than one bath. A soft-bristled toothbrush lets you gently scrub with little liklihood of damage. Good luck. regards,

As a final note: I steeled myself & took it apart. Actually, I had to. I pulled a motor wire loose during rewiring. You guys are right - nothing broke! However, one item overlooked in the disassembly sequence in drwaynes how-to: The throttle just under the forward end of the rightside...

Wayne, I forgive you for your buying acumen. That's just what I hoped for. Red/orange, black/gray works great. I've found further that the headlight is a jewel - as in faceted, not superb. 2 black wires behind the smokebox cover are also cut. Oh, well - I can fix that when I get up...

Well, I got the darn little lovely - perhaps foolishly (THANKS Wayne R & your $15 locos!! :curse:). Oh well! Not the first, nor the foolishest, nor (hopefully) the last I'll make. Applying power to the drivers, it runs fine & heavy thumb-load on one of them caused no slippage, so at least the...
