    Returning to Train Modeling

Here is my first photo (added to the original thread as well). That is my 2 year old son in the photo. He is currently the most interested in the train. My oldest son just wants to run it as fast as it can go.

    Returning to Train Modeling

First question. Is there a recommended primer for extruded foam? I purchased a water based latex primer (the cheapest available). I also bought joint compound for plaster since I thought I remembered someone mentioning in as something that works well. Lastly, I picked up 1 gallon of some...

    Returning to Train Modeling

Hello Everyone! When I was a child, my two brothers and I built a 4'x8' N-Scale layout. We got about 50% done before we ended up tearing the thing down because of a move. I've always wanted to get back into the hobby but didn't find the motivation to do so. Now with three boys, aged 9 months...

So, what does your wife think?

I'm really lucky. My wife's dad had model trains when she was a child and she had fond memories of them. She is very supportive of the hobby so I am trying to give it a go.

Here we go! Gotta start somewhere.

What an amazing layout! And here I thought your canyon inspiration was from Oregon: http://en.structurae.de/photos/index.cfm?JS=31598 EDIT: Found more photos here: http://home.att.net/~spsrailway/otpostcardscrooked.html I will have to keep checking back and even make a thread of my own as I...

    Father son project

Awesome layout! I have recently decided to get back into the hobby because of my three sons. The oldest is four years old so this gives me some really great ideas on what to do with our new family Bachmann train set. :D

    loco mechanic needed

I had an engine where the coal tender supplied the current to the engine. The contacts between the tender and the engine were loose and caused a stuttering. Perhaps you have a loose connection internally.

    Forums for various Geographic Areas

Hello, Has the idea of having forums for geographic areas ever been passed around? I have been involved with a few organizations that did this and it helped people with local events and such. Any comments?

    Dirty track and cleaning cars

I noticed that Tomix (who makes the Atlas cleaning cars) also has a wheel cleaning "thingy". Has anyone ever used it? Are there competing products?

    model railroads and fire codes

From what I know of codes, Shay is correct. If it were a walkway for public access it would be subject to much more stringent code enforcement. Such as ADA requirements for wheelchairs, etc.

    Anyone tried Atlas' cleaning car?

Here is a page that has some good pictures of the Tomix/Atlas cars: http://www.nscalesupply.com/ATL/ATL-TrackCleaner.html

    Loco Repair - More Slippage

Aha! So the proper terminology is that the socket is slipping on the shaft. :-D I was wondering if I simply "keyed" the shaft if the socket would stop spinning enough for the motor to drive the wheels. I think I will try that before using CA because I just know I would end up gluing the...

    Loco Repair - More Slippage

Hey Everyone, I found the problem with one of my locomotives... well actually, several problems, but one in particular I am not sure how to remedy. The small hubs on either side of the main motor axle (show in the picture below) slip and so the motor just spins and won't drive the dog-bone...

    Flextrak vs Snaptrack

I was going to ask about the differences between Code 80 and Code 55 but you beat me to it. I do know that Flex is the way to go. Right now I have a box full of sectional and I have no idea what I can or can't build with it. It would be one thing to start with a plan and buy from there, but I...

Using Cat 5 For Power Extenions

I didn't even think about using CAT5... I have a spool of it at home that will be perfect for wiring my layout. Woohoo!

Oh great, now I have to clean the Loco's wheels. ;-) Should I use the same cloth on the wheels?
