    Instant Roadbed

I found it to be pretty forgiving if you catch your mistakes early and don't have anything ballasted. I pressed the track down lightly the first time around because it was the first time I had worked with flex track and I was able to pull it up and adjust as I cut and fit. But once I was sure...

    track problems

I've noticed that some of the Atas track plans will require a bit of fudging to work. I tried duplicating their stuff on their right track software and a few times it won't go together as nicely as shown in their books. Most notably the super pretzel from book #9

    Instant Roadbed

I like it. If it's not commonly used it's probably because it's not pushed in the "how to" books and because most folks learned to use cork. I like the way it deadens sound. to experiment I laid a 22" loop and just placed the ballast on half and glued down the other half. You can tell...

    Thomas the Tank Engine

Went to the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay yesterday. What a great trip.

    Cleaning loco wheels

yeah just hook up the power pack to any spare piece of track you have laying around and use that.

    new format

score another one for no. I much prefer the white background. The big sidebar is a pain as well. Something across the top or bottom would be much better.

    Working around cabinet doors

If you're going around your basement you will have to have a main power bus (like 14 gauge wire)from your power pack running with the track (under the benchwork) with smaller feeders(18-20 gauge wire) run up to the track every so often, 3-6 feet depending on who you listen to. This will ensure...

    Starting Over Decisions

Actually Bachmann seems to offer quite a large selection for their EZ Track line including 3 foot straights and a complete crossover to cut down on joints. No flex stuff that I've seen tho. And actually comparing Atlas code 83 flex with cork and ballast items with their True Track the cost is...

It's MONDAY 1-24-05, weekend modeling accomplishments!

Finally tried my hand at using flex track. Slapped together a 4 foot diorama with flex track over cork. Sure is easier to ballast than power lock. No pics tho, the kid took the camera to an SCA event and left it with Grandma. Maybe next week.... Spent some time poring over the info on...

    Makin' it stick

I ended up using regular ol testors model cement. Seems to work OK. May not be a train but still was fun and I used my layout building skills to make it.

It's MONDAY 1-10-05, weekend modeling accomplishments!

picked up a Thomas the tank engine set, played with the right track software and figured out my next x-mas layout and tweaked my around the livingroom layout.

for the Thomas fans out there

Just picked up the Thomas the tank engine set(22.50 brand new, check Wal Mart..quick) and was wondering if it would run on 15 inch curves. I had an idea for a Christmas set up with a trolley I bought this year. And it would be neat if Thomas would fit on it as well. I haven't bought any track...

    Your opinions please on EZ-Track

I've been looking at the different roadbed tracks. I brought home some ez track and some truetrack from Atlas. I like both but the EZ track is a bit tall. You most certainly want to get the grey roadbed with nickel-silver track.

    John Deere RR Ideas....

That John Deere set started me down the model railroding path last year. Been a wonderful trip so far. I set mine up as a sleepy midwest farmtown early 60s. Since my 5 year old is a tractor nut we did a couple of farms as well. The powerlock track is a bit tall and hard to ballast. 3/8 inch...

    Makin' it stick

The wife bought our youngest a couple Ertl farm sets for Xmas. Since I am the "train layout guy" I got nominated to whip up a little farm layout. She wants the buildings glued together and place on some foam like my trains. However, the plastic used on the buildings is softer than I am used...

    powerlock track

wow fast response :) Thanx. Looks like tape is the way to go for isolation. But after further research and application of a small phillips I find that I can take apart the bumpers on the end of the sidings and solder wire in there to the track contacts. For switching power on and off to...

    powerlock track

Got a cute little holiday express set from lifelike and was looking into making a christmas layout. Basically an oval with 2 sidings so I can have 2 different trains to run without having to put them on and take them off. Only problem is I can't see a good way to isolate the sidings from the...

    Layout vs. Humidity

THis spring wreaked havoc in the basement. Sump pump ran 24/7 for weeks, had fans blowing, dehumidifier going. The layout is a total loss. mold infected everything. Old farmhouses have charm but basements are not their best feature. I'll never use a basement that needs a sump pump for a...
