    Who says...

...that Norfolk Southern has gotten out of steam? Here's a picture of one of the locomotives at the train ride at Zoo Atlanta. It's a neat little engine (would love to have it in my back yard :D), but it'll never replace 4501!

Is this the shortest short line or what?

Does this short section of track qualify as Georgia's shortest railroad? This is outside a railroad-theme gas station near La Grange, Georgia. Hey, it's a way to use up all of those little pieces of flex track that are too small to do anything with! :D

    Nantahala layout

train97It's deja vu all over again! Since I was getting close to finishing my Bear Point Railroad , I needed a new project. I decided to build another pizza layout. This one will be set in the mountains of western North Carolina around the Nantahala Gorge. I picked that location to...

    Papa Bear's Layout Party

OK, we have lumber on hand and some Diet Dr Pepper in the 'fridge so it's time to get started. This is going to be a 32" x 44" N-scale layout. This is the one that was discussed in the track planning forum and can be seen here. I had started on the benchwork before the party began, but I...

    3X4 N-Scale plan

Here is a plan I drew up for a 3'X4' N Scale layout. It is loosely based on the Pensacola and Perdido railroad in the late 1800's. Basically, timber is hauled from the logging camp to the sawmill, and finished lumber is then hauled to the wharf for loading onto ships. Since the motive power...

    Manchester, GA

Chris (Interurban) mentioned that he was from Manchester, England and wanted to see some pictures of Manchester, GA. Here are some that I took a couple of years ago. Manchester is located between Atlanta and Columbus. Lines from Birmingham, Atlanta, and Waycross all meet here. Traffic is...

    Warbonnet in the Pines

The Alabama and Florida Railway has an ex-Santa Fe Geep that is in really good condition. Here it is westbound at Sanford, Alabama. The ICG car was the only car in the train. Probably not a very profitable run, but still good to see something running.

    Pensacola Surprise

Mama Bear and I took a trip down to Pensacola today. Coming off of the I-110 bridge into downtown, we see an aircraft carrier in the port! I hadn't seen one there since the USS Lexington was temporarily berthed there years ago. Turns out this is the USS Oriskany. It is going to be sunk and...

    Track plan concept

This plan was inspired by the track arrangement in Troy, Alabama where the CSX and Conecuh Valley interchange. Until a few years ago, these lines actually crossed at grade. The diamonds were replaced by two turnouts. In this plan, the mainline trains travels clockwise around the loop. The...

    Pictures of my FIRST layout

Just for fun, I scanned some pictures of my first layout, a 3X4' N scale layout that I started nearly 20 years ago! I call it the Rock Hill and Argyle RR. It was a short line that ran from a connection with the L&N at Argyle, Florida to the community of Rock Hill. The track plan was a...

    Anybody know what this is?

Found this outside of Montgomery, AL. A few months ago, they cleared the brush off of the track and put this device in at the end of the track. I'm guessing that it's used to load rail cars and equipment on and off of the tracks. Anybody know what it is?

    Shelf Layout

I started a small shelf layout to run some of my HO equipment on. The inspiration comes from the Erick, Oklahoma micro-layout plan on Carl Arendt's website. The layout is 16" X 68" with 4' of "visible" layout space. The track plan will be similar, although I have moved the locale from...
