Suggestions, questions regarding a small N scale layout

I think you'll be disappointed if you use the bulletin board as a base for your layout. The material under the cork is not nearly thick enough (even with bracing). The last bulletin board I had at the office used a 1/2" thick piece of cardboard under the cork, surrounded by an oak frame! The MDF...

    Dependable Locomotive

Brake fluid would not be my stripper of choice (too toxic, fumes, etc) although it will work. I prefer 90% rubbing alcohol (cheap at your local discount joint). There are also products made just for this purpose, but I don't have names  - others here may know the brand names.

    Colorado Resources

Jason - Welcome to this great hobby! Try this link - it is historic images from the Library of Congress. The top of the page starts with California, but scroll down to Colorado. Once in the Colorado area, it is alphabetic by counties. Don't know what county Basalt is in, but there should be...

    Experience with the Appalacian Central

Agatheron, that should make you a real nice layout and if you do stretch those curves, I don't think you'll have any problems. Now that've had a chance to see the trackplan, I remember seeing that issue of MR. BTW, those French fellows have done some really nice work on those layouts.:thumb:

    Experience with the Appalacian Central

I agree - stretching the curves up one size would probably be a good idea. You haven't said what you will be using as motive power on these curves or if you will be running long passenger cars. If you are running generation I or II diesels and 40'-50' cars, you will not have any problems at all.

    Experience with the Appalacian Central

Agatheron - I'm not familiar with the trackplan for the Appalachian Central. Do you have a link to a plan or an RTS file you can post?

Did you get any trains for Christmas?

I was fortunate enought to find an Atlas 55 ton fishbelly hopper with a coal load in Reading RR livery under the tree along with a saw mill kit - both will look great on the layout! Plus, I had already bought myself 40 pieces of flextrack and 15 turnouts and reserved an Atlas VO-1000 (w/decoder)...

    Ballasting Turnouts

Thanks to all! I'm gonna try several different methods that have been suggested on this and other forums and see what works best for me.

    Ballasting Turnouts

I'm gonna post this on the various forums since everyone is split up for the Holidays. I have about 15 turnouts (Atlas remote #6) to ballast on my new extension to my layout and I'm not sure about how to go about doing them. Any helpful hints would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

best bang for the buck building kits?

I really like the DPM kits for several reasons: 1. Very good quality 2. Suits my time period (late 40's-early 50's) 3. Easy to convert larger kits to flats for background structures 4. Even in N-scale, kits are easily detailed

What to shoot for in a layout design?

ddavidv - I am in pretty much the same predicament (N-scale and a 78" X 30" extension to my existing layout) and have pretty much wound up at the same place as you. I started with a track plan from Mike Fischer also: and Dave Salamon on the Atlas forum modified it for me: Now I'm...

    L-Shaped N-Scale Track plans

Agatheron - I'm in the process of building an L-shaped layout myself and it is hard to reach the back of the layout (the part against the walls) with anything over 30" wide. The two legs at the upper right of the plan will go thru an industrial park (not shown) and then connect to the "down...
