Pacific Western Rails Systems Retail Ltd -- a good comany?

I love Credit Valley... but I live in Toronto and it's only a 45 minute drive (without traffic) to visit the store so I have no idea what they are like to buy from over the phone. The store has a great selection of N scale stuff... perfect for me.

Pacific Western Rails Systems Retail Ltd -- a good comany?

I can tell you from my experience that PWRS is a reputable company. I have bought from them (via credit card over the phone) several times in the past and I have never had an issue with them. PWRS does alot of special runs (mostly through Intermountain). I think Dan's objective is to grow the...

    N scale M420W shell's in all it's variations

This on again, off again project is now in the hands of Canadian Model Locomotive Works (CMLW) and they are looking for people to reserve them. As you'll see in the link below, they are keeping a running tally of reserves and once one reaches the "magic" number of 60, it will go into production...

    Turning Diesels?

At it's MacMillian Yard just north of Toronto, CN has turning loops for locomotives at the engine shop, and could turn an entire freight train within the yard (in theory, I don't know if they actually do that). These are more exceptions than the rule, however. Edit: hwy 7 and keele street...

    Turning Diesels?

Since diesels are, in many cases, operated in multiple, the need to turn a unit is not that great. Maniline power consists typically are set up so there is at least one unit facing each direction (there will ALWAYS be exceptions to this). To turn a locomotive, they'd either use a wye or a...

    Kato announces the NW2

Good luck, Kato seems to totally abandon older models. They've done that with their GP38-2, GP50, SD45, U30C and C30-7. There are many n scalers that would love to have another go around with those models.

    Kato announces the NW2

In N scale. Only in the AT&SF pre-1972 freight scheme in two numbers. If they stick to their recent RAPID announce and deliver scheme, another release should be in a few months. I sure hope this is a typical Kato smooth runner. I've got some LL SW1200's I'd like to put on a Kato frame.

    SD70i

I remember the SD70I's when they were brand new, it was about the time I began serious railfanning. I can recall catching 5600 and 5601 working what appeared to be an empty grain train bound for the GTW at Beare, ON. (York Sub in northeast Scarborough). Also caught several undecorated eastbound...

    LifeLike experiences

Though I don't own any LL GP60's (I model CN & CP, neither of which own any), but I do own 9 LL/Hobbycraft chopnose GP9RM's and GP9u's, which were done as a special run. I was skeptical about LL, and had one run for me at the train store... I left with 6 of them. They run every bit as well as a...

So, what does your wife think?

Be it model or prototype, my GF has one comment... "I just don't get it, I try to understand it but I just can't". But she loves airplanes (ex flight attendant) so go figure. I usually counter with "It could be worse, I could be into stamps or Star Wars" and that usually ends it. Mike

best brands of N scale locomotives

Kato makes the finest quality N scale plastic locomotives without question IMHO. Atlas are quite nice, but the Kato models are superior. I have never had a quality problem with a new Kato diesel, but several Atlas units have been poor runners out of the box. Mike

    Kato AC4400's

Mike, don't forget about the SOO SD60's. You don't seem to have any of those on your layout. Why not have a freelance RR and use your current layout to run it on rather than wait for the next layout? As for your CP fleet, the variety could be the various paint schemes worn by CP's SD40-2's :)...

    Athearn's Nscale stuff...

I was more than a little PO'ed that Athearn is doing the SD75I in N scale. I'm a CN (and CP) guy and CN has 173 SD75I's in service, so it's a model I need (ONR's 5 SD75I's come into Toronto often on CN too). This is a model I have been waiting for... waiting for Kato to do that is. Seeing as...

    Athearn Auto-Max cars are out

Scott, that works out to roughly $40.00 CDN... but before importing it to Canada. In the end the Gov't always wins. So $45 CDN isn't that bad, but I have other commitments coming up... like Kato AC4400's. rcwatkins, Kato is doing the SD70M in NS & UP with the flaired radiators. You guys are...

    Athearn Auto-Max cars are out

I saw one of Athearn's new Auto-Max cars (CPR) and it looks pretty nice in it's package. Did not touch though. I was tempted to buy it but luckily the $45 CDN price tag was enough to get me stop. Does anyone on this list have any of these cars? Can you give some impressions about them? Thanks...

    Switch engines

In Toronto, CP uses pairs of SD40-2's on the hump and single GP7U's and GP9U's with a slug on the pull-down. Outlying yards seem to use single GP9U's or GP9-Slug sets. In Havelock, Ontario on CP's KLR internal shortline, they use the road power (GP9's and GP38-2's) to switch their train in the...

    Anyone tried Atlas' cleaning car?

I have one. It really sucks up alot of dirt and dust... also good for removing those few bits of ballast not glued down Mike

any atlas forum make it here yet

Been a while since I last posted but I've been lurking here... mostly watching "The MAT goes mushroom" thread. The number of posts should be picking up now! Mike

    Atlas C-630 (unofficially) announced... ?

I wouldn't touch them with the tri-mount. The CDN prototypes (MLW's) did not have tri-mount trucks, but rather the short wheelbase Dofasco truck (used on CN 2400 series GE C40-8M's, amongst others). The difference is similar to trying to pass a Blomberg 4 axle as an FB2 4 axle truck... not even...
