Potential plan for n scale layout

Russ - Thanks. After looking at it again, the crossover on the right is going to have to move lower as there is not enough layout width - perhaps changing to a curved turnout crossover? I see the sidings to the right of the bridge, on top, more as staging tracks hidden mostly by scenery, not...

    Foam as benchwork?

Some interesting and creative ideas; thanks guys! I'm leaning to my first impulse of using a hollow core door with a 1" foam base on top for my next layout, but my mind changes as quick as the weather. Jim

    modelpower track?

I have never used it, but I have not heard anyone ever say anthing positive about it. Better to stick with Atlas, Peco, ME, Unitrack, etc, I think... Jim

Peco C80 turnouts with sectional track?

I have used Peco C80 turnouts exclusively with Atlas flex track previously, but was wondering if anyone found it beneficial to use sections of Atlas or Peco sectional track with them, and which radius ones make sense. I was surprised to find that Peco C80 had some sectional track like their...

Potential plan for n scale layout

I know this is a simple trackplan with just a couple of passing tracks and sidings, and an interchange track. I think I could easily add a half dozen more turnouts but I would like to keep it uncomplicated. The placement of sidings and buildings are subject to change. I'm not really into...

Potential plan for n scale layout

Reverse loops are a subject all to themselves. But they are really not that bad. I had one on my first layout and got good enough at throwing two toggle switches at once, that the train maintained speed and smoothness while going thru it.

Potential plan for n scale layout

I see what you mean. There are three reverse paths that a train can take, but only one reverse block that has to be managed. That block is the third bridge's. If a movement enters that block, entry direction has to be matched and the main has to be reversed before it leaves that block...

Potential plan for n scale layout

Russ, Thanks for your comments. The snow is falling and I've only had one cup of coffee so far, so I could be missing it, but I only see one reverse section at the third bridge up from the bottom. If that block is crossed, then a reverse movement occurs. The siding on the bottom right was...

Potential plan for n scale layout

First pass on a potential new n scale layout plan for about 34" x 80". Priority was: single track, room for scenery, no grades, no tunnels, several sidings to pass/park trains, river, minimum of industrial sidings, reverse loop. Comments welcome. Jim

    Foam as benchwork?

Some good experiences/advice/suggestions already; thanks. Maybe I should have posted this in the Technical Q&A. I like the Tortoise switch machines and the "protected" space under the bench top would have to protect their depth. On the last two layouts I used 1/8" masonite as the facia...

    Foam as benchwork?

I'm in the pre-planning stage of another n scale small layout and my mind is wondering. That's what we call thinking when you get up in age, but that's another story. Anyway, past layouts have been the traditional open grid with plywood sub-roadbed. Usually 1x4''s around the edge, 1x3 cross...

What to shoot for in a layout design?

Like what you have done in making an oval appear not to be an oval. I think I would have the diagonal track that goes to the back side actually connect to it, instead of going under it and stay hidden. This would make a reverse loop and require some additional wiring, but I think it would add...
