    Ship in a layout itch...

How "old fashioned" are you talking about and what area of the world? Boats of all types are very regional in design with sea conditions, weather conditions, and how sheltered the waterways are all contributing to the design process. Additionally, in many parts of the world, once a boat was...

    Ship in a layout itch...

I suspect that the American fleet has been split roughly in half between the East and West coasts since shortly after WW1 if not before. The Panama Canal is a "bottle neck" for transferring vessels from East to West or vice versa, and the large carriers won't fit the canal. It is much easier...

    Ship in a layout itch...

Newport Road Island had a Navy base until the late 1960's or early 1970's. Since the Subs were all based out of New London or Groton, Connecticut, I would expect that the surface warfare ships were probably stationed out of Newport.

    15" radius question

a standard #4 Atlas Custom line would probably be about 18 inch radius, but that would probably make a nice transition curve into a 15 inch. If your locomotives and rolling stock is small enough, you might be able to use flex track and reduce the radius to 12-14 inches in the center of the...

    Sp daylight diesels

The "Daylight Scheme" was a passenger only color. Freight used the "black widow." As far as I know, the S.P. always used 6 axle power for passenger trains, and 4 axle power for freight. By the way, the 6 axle power was not like the modern Sd locomotives with all axles powered. The E-units and...

    Fm h-16-44?

Mike, originally when the first railroads to switch over from steam to diesel they generally bought 3 types of engine. They generally bought 6 axle units like the PA and E units with A-1-A trucks where the center axle was an idler for passenger power. They would buy 4 axle b-b units (all four...

Until when did the EMD FTs remained visible?

Santa Fe ran a bunch of them in passenger service during and just after WW2. By 1946 when Santa Fe started receiving the new F-3's the Ft's were relegated to freight service. In the early to mid 1950's (not sure of exact year) they were repainted in a blue "dip job" paint scheme. All blue...

    Fullerton, Ca. Railroad Days canceled.

I suspect that it is just typical short sited politicians. Knotts Berry Farm is in the next town to the West of Fullerton. Disneyland is in the next town to the South. There is nothing of interest in Fullerton to attract the public except the Amtrak station that attracts 6-12 railfans each...

    Back from the drawing board

Do you have access to the back corners of the layout at each end? It will be extremely difficult to reach the far back corners from the front of the layout, and impossible if the layout is more than 3 feet high.

    Newbie -- model builder program

Scalpels work better than Exacto blades and are made of better quality steel. There is also a tool company that makes a tool for sharpening scalpels, but I can't remember then name of the company, or the product.

    Forum Loading Problems?

It happens to me every once in a while. I just leave the forum and come back a day or so later and it seems to work fine. Sometimes it will work fine when I'm checking one section of the forum and then will start loading slow when I go to another section. I don't know if it is general traffic...

    Fullerton, Ca. Railroad Days canceled.

Hopefully the loss of revenue for the business owners in that area will get the crooks booted out. Since I don't live in Fullerton, I have no vote in their elections.

    Fullerton, Ca. Railroad Days canceled.

I found out at the railroad club's Christmas party last night that the Fullerton Railroad Days celebration that ordinarily occurs the first or second weekend of May each years has been canceled. A major reason for the Fullerton Plaza Railway Association to organize and promote the Railroad Days...

    Collectible Kits?

I just noticed the picture of the "Assembly plant" in the first post. The office section of that kit would make a perfect small town or suburban auto dealership showroom.

    Dan's Layout

Dan, the January issue of MR has an article on building a concrete trestle for the magazines MR&T company layout that is identical to the single post beam Tom shared.

How to strip paint from an Athearn wide vision caboose?

Denatured alcohol is the chemical agent in automotive brake fluid that works as paint stripper. I don't know what is available in the Philippines, but Home Depot and Lowes here in the U.S. carry denatured alcohol in 1 gallon containers in the paint thinner area of the paint dept.

    Poll: Favorite Steam Manufacturer

Robert, I don't think Lifelike ever released a steam engine in the Proto 1000 line. The Proto 1000 line was basically a simple, less expensive body mounted on a P2k drive.

Lehigh Valley & Keystone Model RR club pics

Outstanding layout, Tom. I have one suggestion for future pics. When you shoot from a high angle (helicopter shots) the fact that your mountains are low relief against the back drop is emphasized. If you shoot more low angle, track level shots, or tighter overhead shots that don't show the...

    Roadbed in the Yards?

In that case, take a lesson from David's post (60103 user name) and make the yard at the same level as the mainline, but raise up the contours of the ground under the yard so that your yard doesn't look like it has the same ballast as the mainline.

    Collectible Kits?

Josh, Uptown Motors would not fit you current layout plans as a car dealership at any rate. It is definitely a big city car dealership where the building is multistory like a parking structure. In big cities like New York, Chicago, or even relatively small cities like San Francisco where land...
