    Freight siding

We all fret about laying our rail straight on our layouts, but here's a picture of a freight siding next to one of our plants. The line is currently a BNSF line, but the siding has been there since the SLSF (Frisco) days 30 years ago. I know of at least three derailments here in the 30 years...

    Grandson starting right

My new grandson is going to be out-of-state Christmas day, so we celebrated with him last night. Here's a picture of him with his first railroad model.

    Awol

Haven't posted lately. Here's why; 7 lb 10 oz grandson Conner, born last week. Our first grand baby. Mom and Conner are doing well. I'll get back to modeling as soon as the initial thrill wears off.

    Rip Track

Around the corner from where I work there's a rip track for the DGNO railroad. It sometimes doubles as a team track. It is right along a public road which is where I was when taking these pictures from my car. They'll use just about any type of motive power as shown here.

    Spotted yesterday in Texas

While I'm used to seeing all types of power on the BNSF line near me, this is a first. I believe it's an SD40-2T. I don't recognize the paint scheme.

    Athearn blue box

I have the luxury of being able to shop at two LHS's. One of these is a large shop in an affluent surburb north of Dallas TX and the other is a small one-man shop about 30 miles closer to home. In the large shop they don't have more than 50 or so Athearn blue box kits out of a total inventory of...

    Did you know?

I accidentally discovered that the floors on a number of Athearn boxcar kits can be installed upside-down. That puts the shiny metal weight inside and allows the wood-scribed side to face down. Of course you would have to glue the weight to the floor.

    ground throws-which side?

I use some ground throws to operate turnouts. All of the commercial turnouts are made to have the throws on the straight side, but I have reversed some to the diverging side in my yards due to clearance factors. Which side do the real railroads use? Is there a standard or is it dependent on the...

What color do I paint the ...?

Around the edge of my layout I have a 6"-8" fascia board made of masonite. It rises about 1 1/2" above the layout for fall protection (from occasional cats, not trackwork), and I have painted it a dark green. My question is what color should I paint the interior side? The rough masonite side is...

    placards

I have a vague idea of what placards are, but I really don't have a clue as to their usage. What exactly was (is) their purpose and are they still in use today? If not, when were they phased out? This question came to me while reading an article by Lionel Strang in the July MRR.
