    My Oldest Loco

I have 2 contenders for oldest loco on my layout. I don't know when they were made, exactly, as they were second (at least) hand when I found them. First a cast FA. No manufacturer name anywhere. Sorry the first picture isn't the best. The othr picture shows the underside and you can see where...

    PE Wire Greaser car (Suydam)

This is an old Suydam model of a PE work car. When PE changed from wheels to shoes for overhead pickup, there was a lot of friction created with the wire. Their solution was this wire greasing car. The middle pole was for power. The ones at the ends had a tube below the shoe that held a stick of...

    DC test track on DCC

I don't think I've heard of this before, but... Has anyone rigged up a DC test track on a DCC layout using a spare decoder? I keep seeing DCC users saying that they couldn't test a DC loco because they don't have a DC power pack. So wire a disconnected length of track through a decoder to the...

    Platelayers layout tour

Our club held a mini-layout tour recently. There were 5 layouts open, including mine  and 2 carloads of members came visiting. Pictures taken on the tour are posted at http://www.theplatelayers.org/layouts/platelayers_layout_tour.htm (For security reasons the layouts are not...

Idea for a Model Railroad to fit what you bought

We are all (nearly all, anyways) subject to buying locos and rolling stock that don't really fit a model railroad -- one each of all the big locos instaed of a fleet of medium sized ones. So my suggestion is to model one of the divisions near the major shops. Most railroads tested newly re-built...

    Railroad news site?

Does anyone know a site where I can get up to date railroad news? I used to use Trains.com. but now they require a subscription and they don't reprint the news in the magazine.

Narrow Gauge through the Bush - New Book

announce1One of my friends, Rod Clarke, has just written and had published a book called Narrow gauge Through the Bush, about the Toronto Grey & Bruce and Toronto & Nipissing Railways. This is a big thick book -- almost 400 large pages, tons of diagrams and old drawings, plus a nice long text...

    Bachman On30 Trolley

We bought a Spectrum On30 trolley today for the Christmas mantel. Nice little model. However, the trolley pole doesn't rise up. It's been fitted with springs, rotates, and has pole hooks at both ends, but it doesn't rise up much higher than the pole hooks. Is this normal? I don't want to force...

    Working in yet another scale?

My wife talked me into buying Bachman's model of Walt Disney's backyard railroad. Now I realise that I'm working in a brand new scale. Walt's railroad was 1/8th full size and I think ran on 7.5" gauge track. My model runs on HO gauge track. If I divide the 5/8" into 7.5" I get 1:12. So I now...

    Coupler or Coupling

I now confess that with all my years in the hobby, I don't know the difference between coupler and coupling. (well, coupling as the act, but I mean for the metal lump) Is there a difference? Regional? Interchangeable?

    Remote Control Sign

If there is a gauge member near where they use remote control locomotives, would they be willing to post a photo of the warning sign for remote control? A friend has a layout that uses a number of hand held remote controls and I'd like to print a copy for him. Thanks.

    Another bit of History gone

What may have been the first or oldest poured concrete building in Canada and maybe North America was demolished today in Owen Sound. The building suffered a disastrous fire 2 days ago and the remains were knocked down 2 hours after the demolition permit was granted. I managed to see it this...

    Campgrounds near railroads

The title probably says it all. This thread should be a guide to either desirable destinations or places to avoid. We just bought a new motorhome and took it on a break in trip. We stayed at 2 campgrounds where we could hear trains but couldn't walk out to see them. Kingston, Ont...

making a list, checking it twice

The old couple had just been to the doctor about their memory lapses. He told them to make a list when they needed to do something. That night the husband says, "I'm going to the kitchen for some ice cream." His wife says "I'd like some too. Better make a list." "I don't need a list! I...

    Subway rare mileage in Toronto

announce1 The Toronto subway is going to be running regular service on track that hasn't seen passengers since 1966. http://transit.toronto.on.ca/ In 1966 the new subway line was connected to the old one with a wye which included 2 2-level stations. At the wye, alternate trains went different...

    Which way is forward?

This was asked on a British forum recently, and I thought someone here might have some thoughts. When you have a locomotive with both ends the same, e.g. a GG1, RDC or an ABBA set of F units, how do you know which end is the front, to tell it to go forward or backward? This was asked in the...
