When is a paper model not a paper model?

Hi all,
I've been a bit out of touch for a while, travel has been the major cause of that, my wife has been the majority of the other.

Not that she's against my hobby, quite the contrary. She supports me (ok, tolerates me) spending time on this. In return, I have provided her with several card projects that she had needed/requested for various events she has worked with. I designed and build a wedding well for our daughter's wedding, a hot air balloon for a fund-raiser when she worked with United Way. There have been quite a few others.

She has allergies to the major laundry detergents and she has spent years trying to find something she can use. Looking on the internet, she found a recipe that uses common items found in stores to grind up and make here own. By doing this, she no longer itches from the laundry detergent and it cost us maybe 4 cents (yes, 4 cents) a load by doing this herself.

She is now unemployed and is looking for work. In the meantime, she has a marketing project she is trying to start. She is making the laundry detergent powder and wants to sell it. She had me design a box to hold enough powder to make either 1 or 2 gallons of liquid detergent. My daughter came up with the idea to make the box look like a washing machine.

Here is my design, I wanted to make it as easy to cut out and assemble (only 1 glue joint) for her as I could. The box opens similar to a top loading washing machine and the smaller one (1 gallon yield) is almost 2 inches cubed, the larger 2 gallon yield is about 2-1/2 inches cubed. What do you think?

This is a very clever and ingenious idea. The box looks GREAT and is very "EYE CATCHING".
Personally, I am not into "GIMMICKS" that sell a product. However, if I saw this at my local store, I would give it a second look (and possibly even buy it to try it out.
I hope that this little venture that your wife is starting on, works out for and she is very successful.
Please keep us posted on how she is doing with it!!!

This is an ingenious idea! The box construction is easy and surely doesn't take up much on resources. Very clever design concept to sell detergent in a washing machine. And your name on the box is the icing on the cake. I wonder how many people know who and what a great artist you are. (It would only be better if it would carry your autograph on it, so it might become a collector's item. Maybe a limited edition? ;) )I wish you all the best of luck with this project. :)

That's absolutely brilliant! As a parent of two kids who had skin ( and every other) allergy, this is a fantastic idea! In pre-internet days, we went crazy with this problem, so I think a lot of people would benefit from it. And an eye-catching package design like this can only help your cause. If I were you, I would look into copyrighting that design if you're going to market it for your own protection. It's really unique, and I wish you both much success!

Well, my daughter has hit me up too. She makes cakes on the side and was just referred to the Newport Aquarium (just across Cincinnati and the Ohio River in Kentucky) to set up a display booth as a supplier for a wedding show later this year.

She remembers how I went to various vendor shows and brought back free samples and cool stuff. She plans to bake cookies, stack them, and decorate them as a mini wedding cake to give out. She wants to have several hundred available. Not a feat for the faint of heart to say the least.

She had given us the idea for the washing machine box and asked me to design a box to hold the mini cookies (cake) that looks like an oven. I came up with a design that she loves. I had to come up with a unique design because she wants it to open like an oven. I'm dreading cutting all of them out (my poor fingers)...lol.

Here is the finished design:

Hello,

it is great when Your wife found something that is good for her health. My wife has psoriasis, so I know that someone must take care about food, cosmetics and other things. She tried out various medicine and other stuff, some things help and other not.
Your box looks very nice. It is an eye-catcher.
In my student times at university I had an introduction into materials handling and storage technology. Your boxes have a little fold, where the buttons are displayed. How do You plan to transport and display them for selling? Perhaps it is difficult to put them on a pile or in a box when this little fold is higher than the rest. This is just a technical view, please do not understand me wrong.
Your box is great and I also decorated some presents or other things with cardmodels. For example the son of my cousin wanted to have money for a sleeping bag for a kayak trip, but we thought it would better to give him the money and he can buy what he thinks is best for him. To decorate it I made a model of an eskimo on a kayak and put the money on it as a sleeping bag.

Hello Marcus,
The Eskimo on the kayak is great!!! Thanks for sharing with us. I like when we can design things for friends and family.

I appreciate your comments and observations for the oven box. The little fold where the button are do not pose a problem to pack in a box for transportation (as shown in the photo below), they nest together. Only a few will be displayed at a time so they will not be stacked (but could be if needed). She can then control how many are given out to control the stock that she brings. So far, she plans to have 350; I figured out that it will take us about 60 hours to score, cut, and assemble that many (I did a time study). Good thing we have until the end of September!

photo2- 250 boxes.JPG We finally got all of the boxes printed (250 of them) that we needed. Had to enlist some help to get them all built in time. Now I can get back to "my" projects! Here is my daughter handing out the boxes (they had a three-layer "wedding cake" butter almond cookie inside. They were a BIG hit and I even got many compliments on the design. She got some very good leads for future business and I was even approached for some possible design work!photo3- Alana handing out boxes.JPG
