Big fan of Deunan and Briareos. I had them pre order many, many moons ago. They came in couple weeks ago and just finally got around break up the boxes. I have a really good track record of breaking ball joints so I don’t do much posting them. Both figures are really nice, and for $70+ each with 15% off discount, I still can’t overlook that they don’t come with much accessories at all. But, I am a big sucker when come to Deunan and Briareos. If only they make the new looks in 1/6 scale too…

Allen, buy a 3D printer, this is stuff you could do so easily with your knowledge of Rhino, and painting, detailing, etc. They aren't expensive either. $2000 will get you an excellent table top unit. Rhino will export into whatever format the machines need, most use .stl.

You didn't order a MakerBot did you? They print in only one color and in one medium (PLA). Not only that, it has a known defect with the printer heads. It is getting horrible reviews. Hold off. 6 months is going to make a big different in these things. If you wanted to do some assembly, there are some ready for prime time, and these print in ABS too! The MakerBot only prints in PLA, which melts very easily. You can't make "real" things out of it.

Check out this one: http://www.makergeeks.com/mikofudiypae.html

Different concept PLA, NYLON, and ABS, even conductive ABS. This machine is expandable. Lot less money too. :)

No, I have not make the order yet but about to. Funny I always read reviews before I buy anything. I just really love the build volume that I was totally sold on the Makerbot, so much that I didn’t even check out the reviews first. Dumbass me!

Well, my 2nd option is the CubePro... wait an sec... let me go read the review first :D Again, build volume and control environment. One color PLA plastic or nylons is just all I need cause I am focusing on making 1/6 scale vehicles, armored suits like landmate and stuff like that in limited runs custom kit format.

Look for unbiased reviews from people who have owned them. Clogged heads are a big problem. A 1/6 scale vehicle is HUGE, do you mean 1/16/ Unless you plan to make it in many parts, I don't think any of these printers will handle that. The CubePro Duo 3D is probably one of the best. It can print in two colors at the same time. Big bucks, $3500 plus S&H, closed system means using their stuff. I am more for open source. Too bad you didn't live close to me, I have the facility for making a better 3D printer, but with my injuries, I need committed hands. The other Cube machines from this company, the open ones, are junk and have horrible reviews.

I have been thinking about getting a 3D Pen to augment paper modeling. Video explains it better. This one is made by LIX. There are a few, I don't know which is better. This one runs off a USB port!!

You got me right, 1:6 scale. I will be printing in small section just like any injection plastic model kit. I printed a 1:6 scale humvee many years ago in the same way with Zcorp resin printer. I’m going to do the same with ABS or nylon this time… when I decided on which machine to buy.

Here is the humvee I printed with resin and obj for fine parts. I built it during down time when I was working at Disney studio. The 3d model was built with Maya and took me about 2 months to finish, that's before I know anything about Rhino. It was not fun trying to transfer Maya file for 3d printing, not fun at all. Back then, I got a lot of 3d modelers friends in the studio too I can ask for help and they all happy to show me which key to push to do what I need. Since then, I have not touch Maya again. I only use it once in the blue moon to open files. I forgot just about everything they taught me.... but I still remember how to move and rotate the model... :)

That's pretty awesome. If you do a new vehicle, it would be good to study the actual vehicle so that the parts work, or move anyways, at that scale, they should. I have the 1/8th scale Jaguar XKE, like the one below, it's 90% finished. The suspension works, the Windows crank up by the windows crank, the wheels steer, hood flips up, and the engine detail is amazing. I had one new in the box, and sold it e months ago for $275. I needed the money. I had only paid $35 dollars for it 20 years ago. I still have the one left though, and that's enough. I grabbed these pics off of the web. Mine is Red. I had the same guy offered me $200 for the one I have almost finished. Monogram lost the molds when the factory caught fire, and the Fire Department sprayed the building down with saltwater, destroying the molds. They should have let it burn, the heat would have done nothing to the molds. What a loss. So many models that will never be able to be had again. It killed Monogram.

A model at 1/6 scale would be better served with detail, like working suspension. Make the right car, you could get a fortune for it! People are selling the programs too, though copyright issues will start popping up soon.

That's an awesome Hummer, what did you end up doing with it? Was it in a movie? First time I ever saw a resin/liquid/laser 3D printer was in 1983. it was classified, for rapid prototyping, and the software was proprietary. To be honest, I think these printers have taken too long to develop, they are too slow. The printers being used by the defense companies are decades ahead of anything we are seeing. What G.E. is using in house is almost Star Trekish. :)

Here is the sad state of my prototype Humvee model in today. I was planning to partner with couple of my artist friends to manufacture it in China and offer it in model kit format to keep the price under $300. $200 was my target. At the time, 1/6 military action figures are at its height and still somewhat affordable by most collectors. It didn’t pan out. My friends don’t want to put up the money to start the company. Anyway, the prototype did not survive the 1,400 miles to our new resident. I am in the process of gluing thing back together right now, very slowly. When I am done, it will not be straight and square as it once was…. So sad.

The model was built from the start using US Army HMMWV service manual and hundreds of close up images as reference. From there, I selectively dumb down parts to make them more durable. I design my model to be a play toy, not no touchy display model. What good having a 1/6 scale Humvee or a MRAP if people can’t pack the vehicle full of figures and roll it around on rocks and dirt? My models are going to get play with. Not sitting on the shelf collect dust. I have no desire at all to build any civilian vehicle. No copyright for me, thank you very much! I only focus on military hardware. So, right now I am thinking nylon. I think it is the best choice of material for my need and most likely I am getting the CubePro.
