My son wanted a "Gilgamesh Wulfenbach shmott guy!' hat from the Girl Genius webcomic for crazy hat day at school, how could I refuse.

materials used:
  • baseball cap
  • poster board
  • foam board
  • paper mache
  • polyester batting
  • fabric
  • felt
  • spray paint
  • titebond wood glue
  • more mini glue sticks than you would think possible
  • wires, a switch,LEDs,a small DC motor, and an 18650 cell from an old laptop battery

The base

the spiky things on the side before painting. they are paper mache formed in parts over aluminum foil molds

the mid section before covering it with polyester batting and fabric, this is all foam board

the top section built on a foamboard cone, you can see the score marks on the back side that helped it be formed into shape

and the finished hat

I thought I had some pictures of the blower assembly for the "flame" but I can't seem to find them

Excellent new addition to the Mixed Medium section! Great work! I'm sure the hat was THE hit of the day! :)

Thanks for the compliments!

Here is a short clip of the flame running

the blower assembly is all papercraft (except for the motor and LEDs;))
the body is rolled poster board with foamboard rings. The the fan is all 110lb cardstock. The blades were 2 laminations of cardstock taped to the side of a cylinder to dry (to give them some curve)

That is really cool, excellent, all of the above! The best part is, you can wear it and use it! :)

So I built a "lightning stick" and sewed a vest to complete the ensemble
here is the lightning stick, the body is paper mache around a craftpaper core, the finial and the collet at the top are fimo and some epoxy putty, the "crystal" is a 1/2 liter fizzy water bottle that the shape was modified with a gas burner and the oven. inside the body is hidden a flashlight to illuminate the "crystal". I should have wired up some high intensity leds, but the flashlight was easy

and a few pics of the whole thing (taken at Arisia www.arisia.org)

That is awesome!! Not enough words to describe the sentiment of the request, you building it, and him wearing it. That is wonderful! :)
