    Hydrocal rock molds

rock molds Blake....good advice...thanks...did you wind up finding that the 100 to 65 ratio was right after all? Just curious....how long did you leave the plaster in the mold...before crossing your fingers!....and prying it out?

    Hydrocal rock molds

Reply to rock molds I really appreciate all the suggestions that have come in....thanks guys! I forgot to add that I have been wetting the molds with wet water....but shaking most of it out so as not to leave a puddle in the bottom of the mold. The toothpick idea is one I will try! I said that...

    Hydrocal rock molds

Using lightweight Hydrocal and Woodland Scenics rock molds, I can't seem to make rocks without them breaking apart when I try to remove them. Rock molds (such as the enbankment mold) are shallow rocks so there isn't a huge amount of plaster being cast. Have tried to follow mixing proportions...

    Engine yard cinders

I model the steam era in HO, and pictures of engine yards appear to show fine cinders between the tracks almost up to the tops of the rails. What to use to duplicate this? I use black Woodland Scenics N-scale ballast (I like the smaller size) but even this is too course to use to duplicate...

    Covering the layout

away with the dust! My HO layout is small....about 14' long by 4' deep. I buy the very thin plastic sheting sold in Home Depot designed to cover furniture while painting. It's so light weight it doesn't knock anything over, and trees are not damaged. Yes, it helps to glue down tall things like...

    telephone pole distance

I am about to add telephone poles to a branch line HO layout. Does anyone know what was the customary distance between them? (Using 30-height along the line....raising it to 40 foot height where the lines cross a track. ) I thought I read an article on pole distance recently----but let it get...

    Reading RR RGD car label

For many years, Reading freight cars carried the letters RDG alongside the Reading name. Haven't found an explanation in Reading RR history literature. Frequenly seen on Hoppers. (Note that this is not RDC----railroad diesel car) Anyone know the explanation? Thanks in advance!

    Reading "RDG" ?

For a number of years, Reading freight rolling stock carried the three letters RDG, in addition to the Reading name. Although I have looked in Reading history books, I have not found an explanation for RDG. Note that this is not to be confused with RDC (Railroad diesel car) Does anyone have an...

    NJ International switch stands

Has anyone had success in attaching working NJ International Low Ramapo switchstands (Model 1914) to Atlas Custom Turnouts. It is easy to link them together, but when I throw the turnout, the distance that the linkage moves, doesn't turn the switch stand a full 90-degrees.

    pigeons and other wildlife

wildlife Thanks everyone....for the suggestions. Will follow them all up (Didn't see a Preiser listing for pigeons but will check again.) Wasen't it John Allen who did those beautifully detailed layouts and added little things like pigeons? You could look at pictures of his layouts time after...

    pigeons and other wildlife

I would like to add some wildlife to my HO 50's era steam branch line---and something like some pigeons would do the trick (regular birds would of course be too small,) Haven't found a "pigeon" source---anyone have some ideas?
