New to N scale...need some help please!

I would go with the NMRA Module standard of 1-1/2 inch (http://www.nmra.org/standards/modules/ms-1_0.html) instead of the tighter 1-3/16 inch recommendation (http://www.nmra.org/standards/sandrp/s-8.html).

    tortoise

Tortoise Questions I tried 2 of the ways recommended. I ended up using the AC power and SPDT solution until I converted to DCC: I used solid core copper wires. For the switch wiring to Tortoise and Feeders, I used 22 gauge wires. For the bus wiring, 12 gauge. For the AC feeder wires, 16...

Rough time with Woodland Scenics " Smooth it"

Smooth-It I did not get bubbles but I mixed it for at least 3 minutes and tamped it in place like concrete and cement that I poured in 1:1 projects/construction. The only other thing I can think of that I did that was not in the instructions was use a piece of wood dipped in a bowl of water...

    Help

Foam nail holding power... For temporary setup, you could use straight pins but for 'longer lasting-some what easy to pull up later' attachment you may want to consider some of the suggestions in this thread "Gluing cork to foam?"

Just bought 3rd PlanIt Software and...

Ah, giving up the PC. Well, to run 3rd PlanIt you will need Windows, so, yes, buy a copy of Windows XP with SP2 and Parallels. You should be able to run most of the software you got for the PC, even some of the games that are only a year or older. I used "Soft Windows 98" for years on my G3 and...

Just bought 3rd PlanIt Software and...

Intel x86 emulation If you still have your PC, just stick with using 3rd PlanIt on the PC. "Parallels" is emulation software. If you have other Windows and Linux software that you would like have the MacBook run, "Parallels" enables your Mac to mascaraed as a Windows or Linux Operating...

    Big Problem

Glue Something else must have been amiss in that loose section as I used Elmer's on 120 feet of track-to-cork ("Carpenter's Wood Glue" though) and pure Elmer's "Glue-All Multi-Purpose Glue" smeared on the roadbed banks to hold the ballast back. All of that track-cork-ballast was mist sprayed to...

    Feb 15 Weekly Photo Fun

Ah-ha! Now see Thank you for the reply and picture :) I like the green roof you have on yours. I am not quit happy with my gray paint and may go for a darker shingle color or try the green. I may take a door or two out on the viewable side since I like the "in use" look you have.

dsd Tony's Trains has a listing for the DSD-100LC Hminky used (DSD-100LC Low Cost and PnP Sound and Power | Digital Sound Decoder | Soundtraxx Products at Tony's Train Exchange.) with no caveats about availability... As for other options, the Digitrax sound I got for Christmas required a...

Structures... Just out of curiosity since I also have a Walthers Freight Terminal - What did you do with the back half of the building or did Walthers use the same mold on another structure? I thought about blanking off the hole in the back of mine (the front half you show in your picture)...

    DCC controlled turnouts

Sw# Id# Q? I had looked at the National Model Railroad Association (NMRA) Standards and Recommended Practices to see what they had to say. I never did find a definitive answer. I also checked out a few Club's Standards and Recommended Practices available on the Internet and found some used...

Crossings The flu pretty much stopped my attempts this week to do anything that required focusing much less sitting up straight, so here are a couple of pre-flu picks done last week at my model railroad crossing:

    ground cover

Painting I tried a couple greens including a gloss Shamrock green. "Green" for me was a bad idea as none of the greens were close to the flock, grass or bush materials I had. Green Base example Redone in flat slate brown I also tried putting grass on a couple areas where the ground was...
