what type of layout do you prefer

I have a large basement. If I would get rid of some more junk, I would have alot more. My plans are to add a large staging yard and a river loading facility for my coal company.

what type of layout do you prefer

I have 3' to 5' walk-around space. I have a small staging yard, incorporated in the left 4x8 section. It holds 14 or 15 cars. If I had a digital camera, I would post some pics. But a cam is on my "get list".

what type of layout do you prefer

I don't like using up wall space and I like to walk around my entire layout. I use manual throws only. I want to interact with my road as much as possible, not sit in one spot and run it by remote. IMO wall layouts are 1 dimension, you can only view it from one side. On a walk-around, you can...

    other hobbies?

I'm into motorcycles (dirt & Harleys), woodworking, metal fabrication, fishing (mostly bass, but will fish all freshwater species). I have a R/C off-road car, but I am selling to invest in MRR. Computers, on & off-line.

    N00b surface question

My opinion, I don't like foam. I'm old school . . . 3/4" plywood, 1x risers, cork roadbed. You have carpenter experience, so I think you'll like this type of construction. There is a lot of layouts built this way.

    Breaking in locos

Generally, as a loco is broken in, it will run better. That is if you have a good motor. Personally, I don't take a loco out of the box and run it around the layout. I take the motor out, spin it - by hand, lubricate the bushings, then hook it to a power source and run it at 1/4 to 1/2 speed for...

    MRR, likes and dislikes

LIKES Operations. Coming home from work and finding that your MRR order came. Having a friend over (who can't have a layout), and watching him really enjoy my layout. Another friend, brings his 2 young sons over and watching them, wide-eyed and totally focused on the layout. Just about every...
