This is a great layout, and I love the artwork.
I just was wondering, if the room is 12' x 12' , a 36" radius helix is 6 feet in diameter, or about 1/4 of the whole room. I think you are modeling the helix too small.

With 22 by 24 to work with you have a lot of options.
Imagine starting at one wall with a shelf 2-1/2 feet deep, then a 3 foot isle. On the other side of the same isle is a 5 foot penninsula, split down the middle with a scene divider into two 2-1/2 foot...

A 19 inch radius curve in N translates into a 38 inch curve in HO. This is a luxury on most layouts. If you have 6 feet of width to work with (72 inches ), I figure on 3 inches from the centerline of the curve to each edge of the layout as a minimum safety barrier. That leaves 66...
