    Voltage fun

I've read quite a bit about model railroading so far, but one thing confuses me. I've read that some powered track can run at 12V, 18V or even 24V powered track. Do you require locomotives that are comptiable with each of these voltages, or will any locomotive run fine so long as the voltage...

    grade

Grade vs. angles So a 100% grade would be straight up and down? 50% grade a 45 degree angle? 4% grade would be a 3.6 degree angle? When I build my first railroad, it's going to have a loop in it. Just like my hot wheels set when I was a kid.

    Burning your bridges?

Common sense Well common sense would be to pull the cars off the bridge, but as the original post started, they were following regulations stopping the train in the first place. I guess pulling train cars off of a burning bridge isn't covered in the regulation manual.

A Call to Arms for Amtrak!

Corporate Welfare If an industry can't make a profit over the long haul, then it's time to let it die out. I like trains, but if they can't pay the bills, then it's time to do away with them. It really pisses me off when the government is pumping million of dollars into something that only...

    Totally Totally Off-Topic (Don't Say I Didn't Warn You)

Search Engines I haven't found anything as the now defunct Infoseek search engine yet. Infoseek allowed you to do a search, then do another search within the results of the first seach and so on. It made seaching for stuff so much more efficent. I know in the advance setting for search engines...

Minor Good News Mostly Very Very Very Bad News

Hobby Shops There's two local hoppy shops in my area, only one I've checked out. It was way over priced for my tastes, anywhere from $100 over to three fold the price on items I've seen on the net. Now I'm willing to pay a few dollars more than mail order, cause I can see what I'm getting right...

when is a layout to big

You sure those dimentions are correct? That's over 86,000 square feet, that's more than 5 times the size of my yard, which is only 50 x 150 feet. I find it difficult to believe you have something that big in the back yard in a residential area. Sounds more like a commerical sized space to me.

    Here is the sketch

2 % or 3 % grade Bha, 2 or 3 percent grade, hell when I build my layout its going to have a loop like a roller coaster. :) Although that's an interesting idea, modeling a roller coaster.

    information

Northlandz visit I've been to it twice in the last several years. The layout looks a little beat where the public can get there hands on it. The are plastic shields that are a foot high or so, but it is still possible to touch the model itself. A few displays are protected by glass. On first...

    Different track gauges

What kind of bonehead idea is different track gauges anyway? You limit where your trains can go on the existing network of rail lines, you limit yourself to a specific manufacture of railroad equipment, forget about buying locomotives and train cars from other railroads, they would need major...

    Passengers or freight?

Passangers are more fun I think passanger are more fun, you could have them unload at the train station and illagally cross the tracks against the signal crossings. Then BANG!, the express train takes out half of a family. Morbid? Hey I thought model trains were suppose to be fun.

    ...when I'm gone

Quite frankly, I'll be dead, so it won't matter to me. I whole heartedly agree with Errol in that this is for me and even the time I spend with my son and, hopefully, my daughter in the future is also for me. I have received full value in time spent, perhaps one of my children will want to...
