Ray - thanks for the reply. Guess I'll have to go that route. FWIW, PIA (Precision Investment Associates) has their #158 stanchion set for an SD40. Set includes .015 wire & can be used for GP38/40's etc. List is $14.95. Stanchions are the right shape for later EMD GP9 & up.

I've been looking for a bell like the 1 on that C&O GP. Can you give me any info about it? Never had much luck w/the SV stanchions. Found them about 3 scale "'s too short which just does'nt look right to me. Also the lip on the back did'nt fit Athearn's GP38/40 etc.

If you can find them, the 9 thru 11 1957 issues of MR had 3 pt. article by Gordy Odegard on bldg a "modern" 3 pt. TT. Even if you don't build it, there are a lot of good ideas in the article.

homasote seal
Back in the 60's, 2 guys wrote a series of articles for MR. Off the top of my head I think 1 was named Ernie. At any rate, they sealed everything - top, bottom & all edges w/2 coats of clear shellac. I took their advice back then & its worked beautifully w/no probs. going from...
if you can, remove the brushes & clean the commutator w/a thin strip of 600 wet or dry sandpaper. I usually chuck the shaft in a drill & hold the magnet while holding the sandpaper around the commutator. Also clean out the slots between the plates w/a thin screwdriver. Clean the brushes as well...
Try Castrol super clean. A gallon runs about $6 or less. I used all of the above methods to strip an Ath 38-2 shell. While most paint came off, there was enuf left to spoil a recoat. I mixed the Castol 50-50 w/water & let it soak for an hr. Remaining pt. softened up & brushed right off leaving a...
I was referring to paints like polyscale etc when I cited the price @ $500 per gal. As to what your referring to you are right as I've gotten some @ Wallyworld at the price you stated & they work well.

If you figure the list price of model paint by the gallon, it's around $500 which to me is pretty expensive. For a primer, I've found the 98c can @ Wallyworld or others to work very well. I'd reworked the nose on a P2k DLW E8 & found this a perfect match for toouching up. I sprayed the primer...
