Unreal turn of events with my DVR

EZDAYS, I believe the hard-drive in the DVR might work in a PC. My DVR is COX and is 60g. I talked to a COX tech about why they do not offer a larger drive in their unit. He said people return their units after having replaced the drive with a smaller one. They 'steal' the 60g for their own PC...

    Magazine choice

While I subscribe to most of the MRR magazines, my favorite is Model Railroad News. I am more interested in good in-depth reviews and MRN certainly fills that need. They just recently went to the magazine size format due to postal regulation changes.

Using bridge rectifiers with lenz decoders

It would be easier and cheaper to use a resistor, As the decoder puts out a constant 12 volts dc, use Ohms law to calculate the value of a RESISTOR to place in series with the 1.5 volt lamp. You will need to know the current draw of the lamp. Then use the formula R=E/I, where R=Resistor...

How long have you been a model railroader?

DC from 1967 to 2003 (36 years). DCC since 2003 (4 years). Total of 40 years. The DCC years have been the most fun... by far!

    radio DCC

I got lucky and did not follow the herd. I bought a Lenz system and their cordless phone adapter. The cordless phone works great! I am using a 2.4 ghz model and the total cost including the Lenz adapter was $70.00. I find the cordless phone very easy to use and the range is 100's of feet. The...

Help me choose a DCC system

I bought Lenz 3 years ago for several reasons. One reason was I knew I would want a radio cab sooner or later. About a year ago I purchased the XPA cordless phone adapter. These work great! While it may seem amusing or strange to those that have not tried it, I use a cordless phone with...

    GE 44 Ton DCC Tutorial

This is the older model, as mine only has one motor and was very straight forward to convert to DCC.

Suitcase connectors, where ya get 'em?

I get'um from Lowes or Home Depot. Mine are Blue. However, I prefer the Posi-Tap connectors that can be found at Wal-Mart. They are easier to use and permit more taps per unit. Also easier to add taps later. So the cost is less. You can view on the internet at Posi-Tap.

What have you learned from model railroading?

I have been in model railroading since 1984 and moved up to DCC over 3 years ago. I also am a HAM since 1961 (K3SBQ). And I have flown R/C airplanes since 1953. I was a computer Software developer for 42 years. I first owned an Altair personal computer in 1978. I am retired and computers are...

    GE 44-tonner

My 44 ton is one of my best small diesel switchers. It is the newer single motor version and is about the only small switcher that navigate through turnouts with unpowered frogs without any problems. I installed a TCS decoder in my 44 ton. The only other switcher I own that can handle the #4...

    How to strip decoder wires

I have used a PALADIN mini-stripax wire stripper for 20 years. They work great on very small wire. I have used this tool a lot for stripping wire on R/C servos as well as MRR decoders. Work great on very small wire. The jaws have an adjustment screw that permit me to strip #32 stranded wire...
