I followed the discussion on this matter and suggest to establish three subsections:

- Out of the box (for beginners or those who build just for fun or who don't have the time, tools or skills to make any enhancements)
- Super-detailed (for the advanced modelers: regular kit with small or big modifications to make it look better such as a Revellogram Viper with lighting, electronic effects, scribed panel lines & custom base)
- Scratch and bash (for the pros: unique models which you have created on your own and which are not available in stores).

:)

I think RF has proposed a brilliant solution here! :) That way a novice builder wouldn't feel "intimidated" when a "scratch & basher" builds a Super Star Destroyer from left over sprue.

What I'm trying to say is; going with RF's suggestion if you post in the relevant "folder" it should keep it nice & tidy :)

The whole thing was a psychological ploy. I had no intent on closing it. I wanted you guys to form it, and you just did. Give me a couple of days to set it up. What will it be called? You know, I'm not as stupid as I look, I'm stupider. Fo'shizzay

Need a Name!!!

It shall be named Fluffy, for being cute and fair to the eye and being of paint and of glue and of artificial protein and of other man made substances :)

Or, (seriously now) how about "Molded models" with a link for DIY?

And then when something grows on the paint they are moulded models :)

OK, seriously ;) : The "Super" in "Super-detailed" could be left out in order not to put up the question whether a model is "super"-detailed. Let's go with "Detailed builds". :)

BTW, did you know that the crappy (!) mpc X-Wings were used EXTENSIVELY on "Empire" even in close-ups? The ILM people only added a mounting point and some styrene panels and used the rest oob. It was the paint that made the difference. :)

Or how about; Kim Kardashian, Pamela Anderson, Michael Jackson/Diana Ross? :)

If I remember correctly, the X-Wings didn't feature much in ESB, maybe that's why....

On that point; useless time wasting Star Wars question; What happened to Luke's X-Wing after escaping Bespin?

Yes to that suggestion. I wonder how "super" was ever appended to "detailed" in the first place. I guess because some folks are better at it which is really subjective. Out of the box, Beyond the box Detail and Scratch/Parts built would cover most plastic model building activities."Scratch/Parts" is a bug a boo of mine in terms of how much parts versus building material means scratch or bashed? Do we judge by weight or by size?

Why don't you just call it 'Styrene Models', or 'Non-Paper Models, something simple? Then if someone uses wood or other materials, they are covered. Let the individual modelers just describe what they did, which they would do anyway. If someone does something special, they'll tell us in their post. No need for sub- categories.

We have a mixed media category, this is for straight up plastic models. Seriously though, let's get a name or I will put up something generic and droll like like: Models of plastic by those who cannot bend or form pieces, must have parts pre-made, out of a hard substance, and sniff glue , Also, welcome to the snap together category, where I cannot for the life of me wonder why someone just doesn't buy a toy.

I'd have to shorten it.

I like Revel Fans idea, though I have truncated it a bit:

- Out of the box (for beginners), One would expect progression.
- Super-detailed (for the advanced modelers): Regular kits. Some many Modifications and excellent paint jobs solid colors fine) Wiring that represents how a car works, or glue the hood closed.
-Scratch build, This would be the Top category, it may cross into mised media though
- Kitbash, Plastic models of different origins, allowing us of mixed media, that make a coherent model of some universe somewhere, or the one in your head.

@zathros : It is obvious that Scratch and Bash are very close. There are many examples of scrach builds which involve parts of different kits thrown together and many bashes which require custom-made (scratch) parts. So the line is very thing and may be crossed on more than one occasion. I'd say the main effort decides in which the model is put. So a ship like the USS Yeager which is made of a Revell Voyager and a Revell Maquis Fighter kit but which has some styrene bits and pieces holding the two main model pieces together is a bash. A ship like the Rising Star is a scratch IMO even though it features the engines of an Airfix Saturn V and the hulls of a submarine.

We should define "Scratch" as something new created from nothing; bits and pieces of other model kits may be used for decoration. Examples: the Millennium Falcon, the Galactica, the Gunstar.

"Bash" is something where different kits are combined to a new model which then remain clearly visible with minimal addition of custom-made / scratched parts. Examples: the Buck Rogers Scorpion Fighter, the complete "Frankenstein fleet" from "Star Trek - DS9" (incl. the Yeager).

I'm wondering if "Customizations" could be seen as a bash, too, such as building the "Armageddon" shuttle using a Monogram Space Shuttle kit as a base and accurizing the Monogram Galactica?

I would just say like IPMS categories, OOB for out of box, the basic kit with not much added, Detailed, which is the kit with pe and or resin upgrades, and finally Scratch, which is just what it says. IPMS classes scratch built and kitbashed together... just my $0.02 worth.

I agree. It would be much easier and much more comfortable to keep "scratch'n'bash" together. My last post was to illustrate that we would need to define both worlds if we are to separate them. The biggest problem with that is where to draw the line, when does the scratch stop and the batch begin and vice versa. IMO both categories are almost equal and comparable. Both require detailed knowledge of the subject in question and similar skills to succeed. So I'd say, let's keep things simple. :)

A lot of scratch builds start off as a kitbash, most kitbashes take a fair amount of scratch work to get finished...

I like Micah's idea best, keep it simple, that way I'm not confused! Believe me, it doesn't take much....

A scratch build to me is when someone gets sheets or blocks PVC, and/or other materials, and makes something out of it. No pre-made parts. That's the line, I have seen it done.

Combining two models together is Kitbashing, no matter how nice you make it look, or ugly, which can be much cooler, A Kitbash is getting ready made models and bashing them into something different,. A company called AMC did that once and came out with a car they called the Pacer.

I have no interest in doing anything IPMS is, or any other forum is doing. This is our forum.

Scratch and Bash are not similar. if I scratch your head, you may go "ow". If I Bash your head, you will not remember the incident, or any other, ever again.

1) Scratch Build**
**Scratch build will mean fabricated. It's easy to take thin plastic, and pull it over the shape you desire, and make something unseen before, or, a representation of a ship, airplane or boat, completely from the use of raw materials.
2) Kit-Bashing (combining models, and materials to make an unrelated vehicle, or one similar vehicle.

3)Box Stock. Made just like the box says, except for paint. In this category, I expect clean work.
4) Self Proclaimed Noobie. I think that says it all.

One more:

5) Classic Models, like Renwahls Visible V-8's, any Jo-Han models, you know what I am talking about. These deserve special attention! They don't necessarily have to be out of production

As the threads build up, further delineations as far as aircraft, spaceships, boats, RatFink's will be added

The preceding 4 categories will stick, got more ideas, we could use some more. Let me know either way, keep banging them ideas out.
