I would like to re-draw it with excelsior textures and make it look federation, instead of some kind of anti-Roddenberry Borg clot.

Wow, I wasn't the only one who felt that way! That ship does absolutely nothing for me, to be honest.

I took the dome of the Enterprise model, as it had the fewest facets and converted it to a Rhino3D format that could be unrolled. I posted the ships to show the over complication of the model compared to the Rhino method. Rhino3d is on the right hand side. I have no interest it making an Enterprise model as they are beautiful ones out already. Just wanted to show the limitations and advantages of the programs.

I may start playing with Blender more, but it is really weird the way the controls are set up, however, the quality of work I see coming out of it causes me to think it deserves further exploration. :)

since I like to lite up my models I press mold my domes and such out of plastic picnic plates with a heat gun into dense foam.
but I like the skill required that you show here. very good.

I choose an easy part. Let me put up something a little bit more definitive. :)

Well, I would use the sophisticated CG model for reference only (lengths, angles, proportions) and "translate" it into a new (simpler) form specifically designed for papercrafting. Make a few renders of all sides in parallel view and you have your blueprints to start from. As for the texture, try contacting the original creator and ask him / her for permission to use the original ones (if available). That way you can show him / her what you are planning and what you already have done, too. I really don't think that he / she would have any objections if he / she is given proper credit.

You guys should recognize this part. I had a bad headache today and rushed it. I could inert a billion control points to make it smooth, but this is not necessary for paper models, because your X-acto knife or scissors and hands will do that. I set up the lighting to show the imperfections. The bigger piece on the right is the original download, the small section on the left, my recreation. The biggest different is that the section I rendered unfolds. Not one line on my Render is from the original CG model, but in a way it is. I had to manipulate and duplicate edges and convert this from a C.G. image to a CAD model, two different things. To some it may be splitting hairs, to others, they know the difference between a drawing and a blueprint. The C.G. model helped, but under close analysis, the intersecting lines and radii would not work when brought into our 4 dimensional world, as when you would unfold the C.G. model, as it is, you would get an "error". Making a model with the intent of "making a model" is different than Rendering for illustrative purposes, which is of and in itself, an art form. IMHO. :)

It is possible to do in Rhino 4 or 5, to be honest. It is a lot of work though, I mean a real lot of work. I wouldn't do this model as there are enough Enterprises models out there, and I tend to like to Render and unfold, as building is difficult for me right now. A good CG model, can be a good reference by extracting the necessary curves to form the surfaces, and adjusting the control points to make it match the CG model. The piece I posted had only around 15 curves necessary to make it. Compared to the 1000's in the CG model. It took much longer to manipulate the control points though. So, respectively, I must come to the conclusion that some CG model, have the potential to be very helpful, especially if you can import it and use it on the same Grid as the one you are making. I find a quad core (AMD 965 Phenom II, in my case) machine, with 1G of Video Ram and 12 G's of Ram will still rotate the full CG model plus the model I create, but it's working hard. It is better break the model into sections and export them to work on smaller bits at a time. :)

In my own personal opinion, please, let me stress that, that Vengeance is the most unimaginative Star Trek model I have seen. It is meh. I have heard this by others so I don't think it will be high on anyone's list, but then again, you never know. :)

I know this thread is technically dead, but I think that because the move just came out on DVD, it is time to bring this back. This might be an ugly ship in terms of aesthetics, but as a warship, you have to admit it looks cool. I think it would be a really cool and fun build. I'm playing with the idea of hand drawing parts Ninjatoes style... Any tips?

suggestions and some pics

I guess I would start with a smooth outer hull for a frame, and then add cut out pieces as the details. its such a modular pieced up ship, I cant think of any way else to do it.
