Building "life size" R2-D2

Well, I've started building R2-D2. I'm not sure how life size it will be, I only had letter sized paper on hand and scaled the printing to fit. I should add the caveat that this build (and therefore thread) may take a while. I'm the mom of an 11 year old with Autism and my time is not always my own, lol.

With that said, here we go:

I'm attempting this without the tabs; the removed tab is on the right and the attaching piece is on the left. I thought the best way was to mirror the removed tab so both sides were the same.

These next images are to give an idea of scale. The teeny tiny R2 will continue throughout the build.

As this is my first build thread, I may be leaving out stuff. If there is anything you want to know, just ask and I'll do my best to reply asap.

@ Andy, I've sent you a pm with the link, as I'm never sure which links are okay for posting.
and @ Rogerio, that is praise indeed, coming from someone as talented as yourself :)

Who? Meee???

Talented? MEEEE? You really mean calling lil' old me TALENTED? I haven't got much to show, mainly now, that all my work is halted.
If you think that I'm talented, you should see other people's threads, like Silveroxide, Rhaven Blaack, daichi, Zathros, skoda, PreacherMan, Ron Caudillo, loenf, and I'll stop the list here, or I'll be rude enough not to mention everyone that should be remembered.
You should check UHU02's fine masterpieces, THAT is talent.
Anyway, thanks for the compliment, but I really do not deserve it. Maybe just a tenth of what you've said!sign1

You're right about the talent that abounds on this site, it's inspiring! And impossible to acknowledge everyone :) (and I have attempted UHU02's time machine, no pics though, lol) You impressed me by jumping in with both feet (tabs? who needs 'em) and doing such a great job on your early builds; so yes, I say talented.

A great start and welcome to the forum!

I think I know the little R2; it's the one with the retracting middle leg, isn't it? Really nice idea to use it as a "scale droid" ;-)

BTW, a quick tip: You don't have to crease every line on the big rounded parts. Just pre-shape them by gently rolling them up or pulling them over the edge of your table. In addition, do not use the flaps. Glue the parts together from behind with paper strips. So you achieve a smoother finish. And don't forget to reinforce your build!:thumb:

Nice start of the R2...
I worked from the feet up...that way i could park it on it's feet..

Do you reinforce the inside of the dome?
or do you glue the outside to carton or so?
For getting it strong.

and offcourse...do we get a fully lit R2 unit? :)

@ Revell-Fan, D'oh! It never occurred to me not to crease, I guess I'm stuck with it, at least for the next row (the first few pieces are done). I'm doing the strips of paper behind the pieces instead of flaps; hopefully correctly. I do appreciate any and all tips you care to share :) Thanks for the encouragement (and you're right about the little R2)

@dnalor, I'm still debating about the best way to reinforce, I think I need to finish the dome to see what kind of stability it needs. Lights... hmmmm... I wonder if I could ;)

sign1 sign1 sign1 sign1 You really had me laughing hard!

I found out that NOT creasing sometimes makes a better finished model. On the other hand, it'll make it a little more difficult to glue, thus making building it somewhat more time consuming.
Nevertheless, I stick to it: no more tabs, and no creasing, whenever possible!

Keep up the great work! :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

Pre-shaping is the essence.

D'oh! part deux

The bad news, it's not salvageable. The good news (at least that's how I'm looking at it- so I don't pull my hair out), I can now try some of the tips you have been so kind as to share. I've re-printed the pages and will get started as soon as I can.
Thanks for your support and patience :)

Good outlook, my last baby caused disaster resulted in the project being tossed, I'll get around to reprinting and trying again just not anytime soon on that one.
