Model of Meritorious Mention: Jans ALIENS APC M-557

I have been tossing this one around for a while and after seeing Skoda build his, I decided to throw my hat in the ring as well. The model can be found over at the ALIENS paper craft site. http://aliens.humlak.cz/ When you get to the main site, it will be on the right side. You will have to play with site a little but it is there. When you download the plans, it will be about 1/48th scale. Go to your printers property and change the orientation to landscape. The model will now be about 1/35th scale. It will be large enough for the details and the tabs will be easier to control at this size. This is the beginning and I have about 80 photos to edit and the build is not half done yet. The teaser is, I am surprised as to how it is coming out. I use almost all of the printed plans but there is an abundance of scratch built material to play around with. And lastly, thanks Rukr for the design, I will try to do justice to your creation.:thumb:

Here is where the scratch build takes place. There are two sheet plans for the floor templates and for instruments and signs The engine panels are a bit too dark in one page. I increased the clarity for them on the other page but the floor grates came out too light. The tabs in the wheel well are not visible from the inside and this will help in the detailing of the interior later on. The back walls of the wheel wells are the throw away parts rescued and placed as the backing for the wells. the dark panels are glued over the tabs and they will not be visible from the out side. I am using Jans plans but there will be an abundance of scratch build in this model. Enjoy and see you all next posting.:thumb:

Did this come with an interior? I wasn't aware of that. Looks really hood. Imagine a drop ship in scale with that! :)

No interior with Jans plans. This will be a scratch built interior with some modifications. Jan did start to design a Cheyenne in 1/48th scale to compliment it but never finished it. Keep in mind, that the plans have it on portrait and I just oriented it to landscape. The parts fit on one page each and it is just the right size to be able to use Tamiya figures with it.

Wait! Are you saying you'll make an interior for it? From SCRATCH? Oh, boy, when will I be that good?

YESYESYES!!!! Silver, that is awesome! :thumb:

Please keep the plans, just in case..!

You might consider adding moving wheels, a rotating turret and a sliding and rotating top gun.

I'm looking forward to your progress...:cool::cool:

I know that coming from me, it is easy to say, "anyone can do it" but practice with each build will give big dividends.

The way that this model is constructed, it does not allow for a steering mechanism for the wheels, unless I do without the interior details, then it could be done. I have plans for the wheels to rotate, free wheeling and I hope that an idea I have, will allow for the turret to slide on the rails and turn to the side in the stowage configuration.

Here are a couple of teasers as to where I am at on the build.

You could use some strong wire to reinforce the rails.

I have two ideas for the rails, one is made out of paper and the other is a wire flatten to accept the rollers. The bracket attachment will be tricky but I may be force to use super glue for this part. See you all soon with more updates.

More scratch built stuff. most of the caution labels have been redone and look much better now. the steering wheel is glued to the bottom of the console ledge. The troop chairs and the operations console officers station will be a bit more different than the drivers seat. Enjoy and see you all soon with more updates.

The level of work and detail that you put into your projects is (ALWAYS) ASTOUNDING!!! Everything that you are doing to this model is really setting it apart from all of the rest.

I like the consoles and the "CAUTION" tape. It adds a bit more realism to the model.
By the way, here is a website that you might be interested in:
http://www.shutterstock.com/pic-123825829/stock-vector-caution-tape.html

It seems to me that (with every build that you do) there is something new to learn from you, whether it be a new technique or just a simple tip.
I always look forward to your next project (like a child looking forward to the next episode of his favorite show and wondering, WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT???).

Your threads should be kept in a special build repository. They're valualble source of info, tips and tricks. The level of detail (of both the thread and the model) is really huge!

Thanks for the encouragement R.B. Hopefully someone else will learn from this one and make a better outstanding model. The caution tapes you see were hand made. I upgraded them and use CG to make the new ones. I also visited that link as well as a myriad of other ones using the google search engine. I will post a sheet of signs, emblems, screens and other stuff this posting. They can be used in other builds as well.

Thanks for looking in Rogerio, I subscribe to other sites besides Zealot, to include dakkadakka and resinilluminati and every now and then on plastic model forums. This will insure that my threads will stay alive for a while. I used to post on a warhammer paper modeling post a while back but they went extinct, so those threads are gone, but still alive here and the other sites.

Here is the next batch of photos. The drivers door is constructed and it will open and close. It also allows a view into the inside drivers cabin that cannot be seen when the top is removed. I find that making the door this way, is easier than folding those teenie thin tabs. The last photo is of schematics that I use for the instrumentation, displays and warnings. Print the instrumentation page on lanscape for this model and in portrait for Jans original version. Enjoy and see you all next posting.:thumb:

I'm sorry for my bad English, so bear with me here: if I've understood it correctly, you're going to make a functional driver door, too?

It has already been done, i just have not got to those photos yet, but you can see them in the previous photos where I show where I was at, at that moment. And the hinges are made from paper but with a metal pin for the pivot bolts.

That's what I love about ZEALOT: the sharing of knowledge! It would take me YEARS to perfect something like that, and here we have it. Thanks for sharing! :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

As I keep adding, If just one person learned from my post then it is worth posting.

Here I deviated from Jan's plans, in that the sloped sides are scratch built. I made a laminated rib support for the sides and for the mechanical panels. The skinning panels are made from cardstock laminated 2X. This gives the model a very sturdy construction on par with a plastic model. Enjoy and see you all soon with more updates. BTW the main console is finished and it looks great. I am working on a slide mechanism for the console operators chair.

VERY NICE!!!!!

One day, I will get down to super detailing a model. And for sure, you will be a big contributor of my knowledge in this craft.
Do you work for Haynes, by chance? sign1
You should, with your very comprehensive build guides !!!:thumb:
