Scaley Armor effect

Experimental Designs

This is a rather weird question but I've been here long enough I doubt that is anything new coming from me.

Anyway...

I like a time effecient method to make the effect of hexagonal "scales" on the armor of a vehicle I'm working on for a friend.

Since I do not print out my models like most people here and build purely by hand I need something or a technique to put hexagonal scales on various parts of the armor of this 1:87 scale model.

An image reference from the internet....

Something if I dry brush after priming it in black it'll show up as this pattern.

i have used netting from a christmas tree as a mask before, you might want to find something simular if spraying the paint on.

Holy crap, that looks awesome!!! :thumb:

So just find something of that sort with a hexagonal pattern?

I was looking for something 3-Dimensional (making the actual scales) on the actual model itself but I'm at wits end and I'm willing to try anything short of burning my own model to start over. wall1

The right combination of colors can give off the illusion of a 3D effect like you did with that model. I just need it in a perfectly uniformed pattern on a flat surface.

Do you want this as actual scales (like that of a dragon) or just tiles (like ceramic tiles for a kitchen or bathroom)?

Not sure if it helps but in the past I have use my wifes embossing machine to do diamond plate.

I have had a quick look and you can get a hexagonal patern similar to your needs to suit her machine, so if you know anyone that does scrapbooking you might have some luck there.

good luck

You could use this method with a pair of your GF/ Wife's fishnet stockings
that ought to do the job :thumb::mrgreen::thumb:

Tiles are probably a more practical approach although my friend requested to have a scaley effect. I'm guessing he's asking to have some sort of overlap, dunno I'm still in experimental stages.

My last gf was into latex, no luck there I'm afraid.

If you wanted to try a scaled texture, here is a strip that you can use (like you would use roofing shingles).

Just print this out to the length that you want and layer it accordingly. That should give you the scale look that you want.
Of course, you can modify it how ever you want.

just so you know that is only two colors, sky blue for the first coat then darkblue over the net.

Thank you all so much for the feedback.

I'm going to do extensive experiments this weekend. If all else fails I may have to break the seal of secrecy and finally reveal a few things.
