Building: Imperial Star Destroyer "Imperator"

Finaly I found the time to start my second project, actually my third but the first didn't turn out so well.

When I found the Imperial capital ships made by Milleniumfalshood I was obligated to myself to build the Imperial Star Destroyer after I finished the USS Wanderer.

I used to have the ISD from Airfix as plastic model but thrue time I lost track of where it went. Personaly I find the ISD a hugely iconic ship and it's appearance realy impresses me.

The model Milleniumfalshood created is simply stunning and is beautifull right out the box (printer). It's also very suitable for a lot of greebling which I plan to do so. I'm gonna try and make this a model that I can be proud of for a long time :)
It's gonna be about 65cm in lenght.

I did quite some custom work on the textures, detail and color in Paint Shop Pro and made it intirely to my personal taste.

Ok, the start.

I intend to make the main hullplates from different layers and started with the bottom layer of the top hull side.
The edges can be folded downward so you get nice textures on the underside of the edge that hangs over the side trench (wow, did that make sence?)

The topside is made of five parts, 2 back, 2 middle and the front part.
So far the rightside back and middle part are ready and the fron is in the works.
This is going to be the bottom layer, another layer will come on top which will be thickend by approx. 3 millimeter. The difference of the second layer will be the edge of the hull that has a height difference.

The first pictures.
These are the two parts of the rightside joined together.
The second picture shows the folded edge on the underside, I used 1.5mm cardboard for thickness.

Nice :)
Do you build a mounting point in it like the studioscale version?

Glad you like it so far, although it's realy early into the build.

I first had to look up what you meant with the mounting point.
If I would do that though I would have to make a hole in the model and I don't realy want to damage it.
I'm going to make a custom stand for it though.

Cheers,
Elko

Maybe this will help you...it's a nice howto....on a destroyer

(en je kunt zien hoe ze dat ophangpunt maken net als in de film..
ik bedoel die aan de achterkant..als je hem niet meer wilt schuif je de motor gewoon terug)

Here you can see the mounting points on a movie prop replica.
and the back one is the one i thiink would be great for this build.
and when you don't want it anymore you can put the engine back on it.

Also a nice skeleton inside..

I have taken a look at it but I don't think I'm gonna do it that way.
I'll make a nice stand for it though, I've got just the place for it in my study on a large shelf.

The website or thread you linked to is very nice for some greebling ideas !!

Here's the next update.
I had a very busy weekend so didn't get around building but I was home early today from work and was able to do some more work on the first layer of the top half hull.

The first layer is as good as finished and I can start with the second layer that will heighten the deck in proportion to the outer edge.

The full length of the ISD is visible now and I measured it at 65cm or approx. 26 inches. That's a lot bigger then the plastic ISD I used to have in the past

Cheers,
Elko

This ISD being bigger than the old AMT/Ertl kit was one of the goals of this project, actually.

I'm very anxious to see this with all your mods complete. It might make me want to restart my ISD2 build. :thumb:

I've got so many ideas in my head for this model, I just hope I can make them all work. It's gonna be a build that takes quite some time if everything is gonna work out but I hope in the end it will be a model I can be sattisfied about.

The foldout is near perfect, just a couple adjustments are needed as far as I can tell. So if anything goes wrong it'll be me going south :)

Hope to update later this week.

A nice sized beasty you have underway there Elko....:thumb:

Looking nice, clean and linear....

Good luck with your project, dont worry about how long it takes, it is not a race. The main objective: HAVE FUN! If you enjoy the build, it definatly shows in the end result.

I'll be watching..........

I was hoping to build some more on the ISD but my pc monitor broke down.
Because you need a monitor on your pc to see what you're doing I couldn't make the next prints so nothing to build

I got a new monitor now, a very nice 24inch flatscreen instead of my old 21inch CRT and I'm gonna start printing as soon as it is properly installed.
A friend of mine has a callibration program with a device that you hang in front of the monitor to get the colors and contrast etc. callibrated, I just used it and it looks fantastic !!!

So I hope to show some updates soon :)

Cheers,
Elko

I'm glad you solved the monitor problem. Nice wingspan extension (from 21" to 24"!sign1), now you're gonna fly higher and faster...:thumb::cool:
I wanna see more pics, please.... :inw:

Sorry guys but my health is taking the better part of me at the moment.
