Crichton from Buck Rogers

C'mon...

Practise is everything! :thumb: I'm sure you'll make it. But be aware: Unfolding can be a very daunting and exhausting task. And it's a click-orgy so-to-speak. Make sure that there is no-one around you who has to listen to your mouse constantly clicking for HOURS. My mom almost killed me when I was unfolding the Colonial Blaster..!

C'mon, man, you're supposed to encourage me...sign1. Ok, I expect heavy, stormy seas ahead, but I tend to be obnoxiously persistant...
Well, we're already changing messages about it in another thread, so I wanna see some test build pictures when you have them! Pretty pleeeeaaaseee (with sugar on top!sign1).
Cheers!

Major update!

Hello, folks! :thumb:

Here we go again. I've stopped working on the Viper to finally complete Crichton. Here are the parts for the undercarriage ...

... and the wheels. All wheels move, the aft wheel rotates additionally.

The internal skeleton for the next element. Please note that I used a misprint of the same parts page and printed a revision on the back side. So the strange patterns you may see here won't appear on the final product.

I have added special glue tab strips so that the cones and cylinders look cleaner when glued together.

Julius' posable Iron Man figure gave me some invaluable insights in making safe and durable joints. His construction inspired me to make a similar tube for holding the arms. The unfolded shape looks very odd, but as the final result shows, it works.

The internal skeleton for the body. I used flaps on the outside for reinforcement. This didn't work, the skeleton didn't fit. So I removed the flaps, et voilá, it fits!

And a close-up of the aft wheel rotating. Don't worry about the side wheel position, I'll add a small stopper to keep them in place.

Thank you! The only things which bothers me is the colour. I was thinking about using silver cardboard for the build but I couldn't find some at my local retailer, only some sort of silver foil. I'm still looking for a way to mimick a silver surface in CorelDraw, but the kit will be light grey for the time being. Maybe I'll make another Crichton with the silver foil glued on.

Are you saying that you did Crichton with moveable, rotating wheels? Is that RIGHT? IN PAPER?
Man, you never cease to amaze me! That's stupendous!

Thank you! Unfortunately, you won't see much of the rotating wheel when the model is finished (unless you turn the model around). But that's the way the original prop was designed. It is a bit like super-detailing a cockpit on a fighter plane which can't be viewed at any longer once the canopy glass is put into place. You can't see it but you feel so much better knowing that it IS there!

Totally agreed!:thumb::cool:

Wow RF very nice, it's a good thing you started finishing this great model.
It looks like a real fun-build to do, in other words, this will be a new addition to my list of wannabuilds when you're finished :)

Great work !!

Your silver foil idea sounds really good.

Are you going to make a B&W version as well? So that those who have access to silver cardstock can use such.

That's the idea. As long as I cannot make a decent silver look in Corel I leave the kit as is (light grey) and provide a white template to be printed on silver card.

BTW, does anybody know how to realistically apply a colour gradient to unfolded cone shapes in CorelDRAW? If you use the standard filling method the gradient runs from one end of the part to the other one. What I need is a way to make the gradient follow the shape of the object (a smooth curve instead of a straight line).
