Galeon San Salvador Hybrid

It has been a while since I have built a sailing ship. This one will be a Christmas gift to my son in law who lives at the Jersey Shore. (My Daughter and Son in law are Ok, they have electricity and very little damage, and his business only suffered a broken plate glass window.)

Pape air started to build the San Salvador, but since he ran into some health setbacks, I decided to go ahead and make a build thread on it. Hopefully he will recover and get back to paper modeling in the future.

Continuing with another build, I hope to have it finished by the Holidays. My initial finish date was for Thanksgiving but I do not believe I can accomplish that. This model will be a mixture of cardstock and wood. The decking is almost finished and the rib sections are heavily laminated to almost the same thickness as a wooden model. The hull will be a mixture of wood planking over a cardstock hull. There is some slight fit problems with the ribs but they are easy to overcome. I will treat this build like a wood model from Artesania Latina. Here are the first photos

I do not build as many as I use to. What is unusual, is that I do not have a single wooden boat. All of them I have given out as presents, especially around this time of the year.

Silveroxide, just so you know, I uploaded the longitudinal planking for this boat. It's in the downloads section. I suggest to cut and fit as necessary, you know what I mean. :)

I got them Zathros. I will probably not use them on this build The original plans will be used as the first planking and I will place individual planks over the printed plans.

The hull is waiting for the glue to cure because I will be sanding the ribs later on and I need the glue to fully set. The difference between this Hybrid and a wooden ship, is that the waiting time for handling the boat is shorter than if it was all wood. So far it is coming along nicely. See you all soon with more update photos.

Having built many ships, I've found a tea kettle works best, to get the bends before you mount. Since you will have to stagger the seams to get the authentic look, you can do a really good job with a steaming tea kettle so that when you mount them onto the ship, there is virtually no tension and the hull will no be wracked. I imagine it will look beautiful with the wood. I guess you know you start from the bottom with the garboards and work your way up. I got this pic off of the website which might help you with the way the real ship this model was made from looks. In reality, back when there were real wide trees left, the garboards were much wider but those days are long gone and wooden boats are made with thinner linking, sometimes double layered going in a crisscross pattern. If you post this over at P.M., Gil will probably have some opinions on how to plank the boat, I could almost bet on it! Doing the same planking on opposing sides, at the same time, prevents the hull from warping. I'm, sure your aware of that too. This will be interesting to see come together, especially with you building it. I attached a .zip file with bigger pics of the boat from the website. :)

Will watch with interest - did a proper wooden boat years back, they're beauties :)

I have built a few myself over the years, and I do not have a single one in my possession. Family and some friends are the beneficiaries of my ships. The same for this one, it is being built for someone else.

glade to see some else buildind this one. will be watching this one with great intrest.

Thanks Pape, I was hoping to follow your build thread until you came up with some health issues. Since no one else came to the fore to build it, I decided to take a break from Warhammer and build it. Hope that you get well and get your gal hooked up with paper modeling. There are a bunch of models out there that are appealing to the better gender. Good luck and hope to see you build again soon.

Here is the next installment of photos on the build. The model is at a standstill for the moment. Ran into a blank wall in getting more details information. I want to add a few more details but info on the San Salvador seems limited. This model has only four gunports and Galeons of that era had more armaments, to include swivel cannons. The wall attachments for the cannons and gear storage above deck is missing on the plans. I want to add supplies into the upper cabin areas and because of that, I cannot close the upper areas. It will be hard to place those items there after the sides are up. Also missing is the life boat/dinghy storage rack. Enjoy and see you all next posting.

Nice idea, I never did a wooden ship and I am a bit afraid of starting but I have been thinking about doing this one in paper with Zathros planking. I do have much on my todo list before like all of us.

I know what you mean about too much to do and so little time. When you build this model as is. I recommend to make a skin over the hull with cardstock. This type of under skin will bring out errors in the ribbing and you can adjust before you place the printed planking.

the rigging is going to get me on details.are you going to add all the rigging or go with what the model offers.

For now, I will go with the standard rigging, but as I get more info, I will expand on the rigging.

So here are a few photo updates on the build.

She's looking really good! You are right about the planking. It is such a shame when you see a nice model with the hull formers looking like a skeleton underneath! Of course we know that this is going to be a great model already!

You know, that ship is a lot bigger than it seems!?!

That ship looks familiar, like one of our revolutionary ships. It has some lines like the Constitution or Old Ironsides but I am not sure.

As for the San Salvador, I am gathering as much deck information that I can, before I start to close it up and have a hard time later to add in the details. I have a gathered a lot of references from other galeons that may be of use for this model. I am also gathering some tips and trick for the making of small details for ship building, which I will post along with the build process. Here are some photo updates of the build. At the moment I am at a standstill while visiting family for Turkey day (Thanksgiving) but I have a few more pics to show.

Back with some update photos. It will be slow for a while, until the holidays are done. I was trying to finish by Christmas, but because of the details, it is going to be done next year. Before I start the planking, I have to fix some of the rib problems, which thankfully are minimal. I am getting my parts ready to make some jigs and things at the same time. Here are the photos and enjoy. See you all next posting.

its coming along very nice

Thanks Pape. I got a stain that approximates the color of the printed plans, that is why I am going for the wood planking. It is tedious but I am moving along, but not as fast as I usually do. Most of my models are finished in about a month or less but wood models have a tendency to slow you down. The culprit is the research, the details and the glue has to set before you move along to the next steps. Enjoy ans see you all soon with the next posting.

Here is the next installment on the build. The wood and paper medium seems to complement each other and makes for a good mix. As of the moment, it is still slow going but I am pleased with the results. Enjoy and see you all next posting.

I think that's HMS Surprise, formerly HMS Rose, used in the Master and Commander film and now owned by the Maritime Museum San Diego.

Bonehead move on my part. I actually did some work on that ship when she was moored at Captain's Cover in Bridgeport Connecticut. I can't believe I forgot to put that in there. Major brain fart. I had a picture of the San Salvador and now i have lost it . It showed a similar comparison type of shot! Sorry!

Silveroxide, you ship is coming out as magnificent as ever! :)
