Rn La Masa & Achille Papa

First of all, I promise: I will finish the Lancia 1zm...

The "Tre Pipe" (Three Pipers) were a long series of different destroyer classes built by the Pattison shipyard (Impavido, Sirtori, La Masa and Generali classes) since 1913, dubbed like that because of their three funnels. These 35 strong class destroyers fought during WWI and most of them survived to fight in WWII, even if they were downgraded to Torpedoboat in 1929. Being obsolete during WWII, they were relegated to escort duties... achieving very little. The only success come from the Achille Papa that, the 30 July 1941, rammed and sunk the Hms Cachalot.

So here there two models. The dark one is the destroyer "La Masa" in its 20's colour, the second one is the Achille Papa in 1942 camouflage.

I build them making a crossover of Answer Insidioso and Zio Prudenzio Prestinari, plus many modification (for istance, the hull and the main bridge).

Even if they did not achieve much, they are fine looking ships, and brought their crews back home, that always has to count for something! :)

Unfortunately, Zathros, they didn't achieve neither that.

Many of them were lost during WWII with many loss of life... They were simple too old and too poorly armed to do their job.

Anyway, these are the main bridge with their charateristic frame.

Found some pics. There really isn't much info out there on these ships. I believe your models are going to be archival records in their own right! :)

I always liked the lean, mean looks of destroyers. As the "greyhounds" of the fleet running ahead of and around the other ships looking for trouble, they were usually at point of contention in most fleet actions. These WWI ships are representative of their nations' technology of the time. As they were relagated to "torpedoboats" by the time WWII rolled around, the action moved onto faster and better armed members of the class. Most navies did much the same with their ships, using the older members of these classes for escort and patrol duties.

Looking forward to more work on these two.

Hi Emanuele,

Some more nice work on these two, they are coming right along.

I found a 1/200 scale WWII Italian Destroyer of the Freccia Class, the Dardo on Ebay that I am keeping my eye on. If the price doesn't get too dear I may have to try for it. Judging by the screen shots the owner put up it is complicated enough to make me crazy for a number of weeks. ;)

Watch out!

The Dardo color is wrong, it's too dark. You should change it with a Light grey.

Anyway, my new work is taking all my free time, so my work has been slow down. After two weeks this is the only thing I have done.

Those guns would have taken me two months to build! Great craftsmanship! :)

Hi Emanuele,

Nice work on the gun mounts. Thanks for the heads up on the color on the Dardo Kit.

After looking around after suffering sticker shock on E Bay for what the guy wanted for the Dardo I found it on a couple of other card model dealers in Europe. While the color may be off I can still purchase it for much cheaper the next time I order from the dealers over there and when I get it do a bit of scanning and alteration in Photoshop.

I'm still working on the two models, even if I'm very busy with my job.
A little update.

They're looking great. :) I feel so sorry for those exposed gun batteries though. A lot of people must have bought it right there! :(

Have to agree with our fearless leader, with little to no protection from counter battery fire or even shrapnel from a close miss, those would be some mighty open gun emplacements.

Don't feel too bad about a lack of posting. Between my work days, trying to get a real diagnosis from the local medical profession for a condition that has been bothering me since the end of August and getting the homestead ready for winter here I have been getting very little done hobby wise. I really feel bad about it too cause I have some real nice ones coming along, durn it.

I'm spending all my holidays studying for the italian teacher exam (on the first round 68.000 of 321.000 passed)... a little sign of the economic crisis in Italy.
Yet, I had some little time for my models.
Here are the paravenes...
not very useful, since most of these ship were sank by mines.
