stormtalon by newobmij

Hello,
I have just started building the stormtalon from newobmij template.
I have just built the main body and canopy.
I have printed everything in double and I am making all the details in the texture pop out by cutting them out of the extra sheet, edging them and gluing them to the main sheet. For the bolts I am doing the same and using my new hole punch (about 1mm in diameter), edging in black those tiny discs is a whole new challenge.

It's poppin' already! Very cool! Some close up detail shots would be nice! :):)

You have made such sharp crisp lines, the model looks farther along than it actually is. That's great!

a few more pics, I have added the tail boom and vertical plane as well as the chin gun mount.
I am not so happy with how my raised rivets look but I'll finish the model that way.
Also had some difficulties gluing the tail boom flush to the body.
(UPDATE: I don't understand why the picture in this post is upside down it is fine on my computer)

Rotated pic for you. :) The model looks really good? I can't see anything wrong, but not being there, blah blah blah, I'd say looks really good from the pic. :)

thanks for the rotation, as usual it is more the modeler than the model which is a problem. If you look at the template, many parts are glued to the main hull using tabs. The way it works is that the part will be for instance in the shape of a pyramid without a base. The bottom of the pyramid will have tabs that have to be bent toward the inside and are used to glue the pyramid to the support (since the template does not number the parts it is hard to give you a specific example but you can look at the small blue part toward the top right of the first sheet).
When I glue such parts I have a hard time making the side of the pyramid flush with the support as the tab will have a bit of spring. In case of this specific part and since I had problems with some of the others I just removed the tabs and glued the edge. The result was much better. I also had some issues with how to glue the VTOL thrusters (bottom left of the first page).

If you look at the attachments to this post, the small air intake is on the first picture, the vtol thrusters on the next two. You can see that from the top they look ok but when looking closely they don't. Some of this pictures will also show the details like rivets which I have been trying to highlight by cutting them separately from a second copy of the template, edging them then gluing them back on.

Finally if newobmij doesn't object I can repost his pdf template with my annotations, in particular numbers for all parts which make it easier to describe the build.

Send him a P.M.. It's the best way to go about these kind of things. :)

No it is fairly easy and it is only 3 pages. You do have to guess how to put it together though. To do so the pictures of the assembled model on newobmij's blog are of great help.

progress from yesterday:
added some air intake on the top of the craft and the tail "horizontal" plane (the quotes are there because they are in fact slightly inclined. Also finished the chin gun mount and the vtol thrusters.
Left: Main engines, gun turret, missile launchers, antennae (kept for the end as they'll be fragile).
I have incorrectly placed the left vtol thrusters but it is not obvious unless one is watching from bellow. I have also started to remove tabs and glue edge to surface the small attachments (like air intakes and camera supports).
Finally I am attaching the template pdf with my comments, most important are the number for referring to parts as I describe the build. I also included "sticky note" comments with information about what each part is, but I only make those after I build a part.
Last but not least I had made a mistake in the way I glued the cockpit to the frame, it is a bit too far forward, it is hard to explain the correct way but if/when I make a second one I'll do it correctly.

Did newobmij not object to your uploading this .PDF? It not, I would like to know. it would be better to put this into the "Downloads" area also. So it doesn't get lost years on. :)

No I contacted him by email and the answer was:
"I have no problem with that. "
Once I am done with the model (in a few days) I'll have annotated most parts and it will be the good time to put it in the download section

engine

done with one engine. I had some fun with the nozzle, I decided to detail the louvered side openings (not sure why they would be there, maybe someone can come up with an explanation but they are cool).
Anyway tell me what you think of the result

That would be extremely excellent of you to do. Thanks you, very much! :)
