Thank you for the kind comments everybody!:thumb:

I have to say, I am glad that the spine is done.... That was a mission and a half!! But, I am VERY pleased with the end result.
I achieved the linearity that I was seeking...!

I think I am going to start on the reactor/engine module next.
Should be simple and straightforward build (He says, full of hope!!)

I have been doing some studying of the parts for the command module, and comparing them to the screen shots from the film.
I see modifications occuring........ But that is a subject for later in the build.

The antennae array is going to undergo some serious modifications also.... The antennae array is a model in itself, and will also deserve its own chapter...

Stay tuned! Will update as I progress....

This model is wonderful. I wonder if UHU has seen it yet?

Thank you Zathros.

I think UHU may have seen it.... I caught him on my thread via 'Whos Online' about 2 weeks ago...... Would love to know what he thinks of it so far!!

Great Build

I have been folowing this with great interest. I am in the mist of building one of these myself and you have given me some great ideas. For the most part the modules are pretty staight forward. I have built mine just like UHU02 instructed. I however have changed the comand module quite a bit. If you are interested I will show you have I have done. Thanks for a great build.

I would welcome your ideas and photos of your Discovery build.

The command module, to me, is the next important part to 'get just right'.
After studying the parts against various reference pictures, I noticed that if I followed UHU02's method with all tabs, the 'layering' of the module panels would look incorrect. The film model has many recessed panels, especially the longditudinal dark bands around the sphere. These I want to replicate as close as possible.
And I think the only way to get the effect right is not to use tabs in most places, but edge glue with backing strips.

But, I am open to all ideas and innovations!! So, yes please, eatonad, lets see how you did on this project!! I am looking forward to see it!!

I use a hobby glue which I got from the craft shop. Cant remember the name, but I will let you know when I get home from work later today.
It is a 'white glue' though.....

it looks great...i would save this.
i like the little door on the steeringside...

and the 3 big doors.....you get a star when you build an open door with one of those little pods in it...

When done very good...you get 2 stars :) sorry at the moment i'm playing mario with my son, so i'm in a star-mood.

I love this thread. I have made three command modules my self, none of which I am happy with. love your approach. any chance you could up load it. so I can give it a go. The model is looking supurb will keep following this build with great interest.

Command Module Redesign

Alas, I do not carry the knowledge to do a complete redesign to that level.
But, I'll learn over time...

Anyway, I want to achieve the same sort of effect as you have displayed, but stick to UHU's basic design of rings....

I have purchased a clear plastic ball, of the same basic diameter that the finished model sphere will be... I think it is like a giant fillable xmas tree decoration or something, it splits in two, and is rigid, so I intend to use this as a former, when building the ring structure.......

IMG-20120627-00614.jpg

Oh, and on the subject of balls, I'm using these as a former, in an experiment, suggested earlier by Zathros, to wet the paper. I want to see how it will shape after drying.....The rings are the rear parts of the main dish antennae assembly...

IMG-20120625-00610.jpg

Oh God! First, it was my nuts and linearity.. And now its balls and rings and keeping things spherical......

I now dub this good ship: "The Rings Around Uranus" ...sign1

I'm would really like to get hold of a pod bay and cockpit for this model......

I wonder if UHU has any plans for that in the future... <<Hinit Hint:twisted::twisted::mrgreen::mrgreen:

UHU has done a great job on the centrifuge though. Thank you UHU02:thumb:

I found this for any designers that might want to play with the idea....

 WOW, and I mean  WOW!! That is incredible. If I had some more detail on the cockpit (some size references) and another view or two, I think I could make it, and unfold it easy enough. I am in awe of how nice you have done this! :thumb: :)

HÉ Eatonad............not really happy.............are you kidding me !!!!!

Personnally I like detailed model and your's is really great. I download this model last year for bulding it and, after viewing your project, I think I will attack the built after finishing my 3 foots Galactica.

So don't be modest and two thumbs up for your project :thumb::thumb:

This is a fun site...i used it for my falcon..
http://www.starshipmodeler.com/2001/kd_disc.htm

This is what my meant with those pods.

kd_disc_Fig16.jpg

here is my hint with a picture :)

what to do about the pods...i don't know..
maybe scale a large papercraft pod down to your scale...but i don't know if it buildable...but it looks nice :)

The basic sphere diameter is 13cm.
These pics of the test build of the cockpit windows front and back...
The mat is cm demarcated. Maybe that'll give you a start...

And some reference pics....

Oh, and BTW, this is the dish after drying. It is held together at the moment by 4 tiny dabs of glue on only 4 four tabs. It has formed perfectly, and the top ring just dropped into place on the lower....
I just need to glue it up properly to hide the black seam line.:thumb::mrgreen:

The piece came out fantastic! Was that one you moistened?

I should have been more clear about reference material. Line drawings work best. I can scale the whole assembly, as long as I have top, side, and front views, I can extrapolate from there. I'll start to look around, see what I can find. :)

A question, is the Aries cockpit so different that it could not be used? This is off the cuff. I would have to look at it. The Odyssey shares the same technology as the Aries. Just wondering if something suitable wasn't already out there. As far as pods, I don't think making some for the ship would be so hard. If they were made up in layers, knowing you would have to sand the final sphere, and add the outside pieces, something could be done. What are the dimensions of a pod that scale? I know this is asking a lot of questions, but if I were to do this, someone has to help with some of the leg work, and take credit for it too! :).

Send him a P.M., with a picture in your P.M. of the model in your hand. You can do this by right clicking view image, and pasting it into the Yellow Box, like the one in the post window, it has little mountains and when you hold the cursor, it reads "Insert Image".

It may be better to offer it to him to download through his site? Just a suggestion. Contrary to some who speculated that I had "some special relationship" with UHU, I could only wish. If I did, well, that would certainly be some bragging rights. I do defend his work, vigorously, even ruthlessly. I would do that for any member of our forum. That is what some people don't get.

I would pop him off a P.M., and see what happens, I just don't know!?! Worth giving a try though.

You sure did a fantastic job. You could always post build pics, for us mortals.!!

Wow, is that scaled down from UHU02's Pod model (which I have)????????

That would be great in the Discovery...........!!

Man, I can see this project growing everyday...>!!!!!

I guess I'll have to do lighting next ....Hahahaha
