Hi,

My name is Gary and I live in Canada, and I just started card modeling about six months ago. I enjoy making a variety of models, but my favorite is aircraft from all eras and countries.

I have a pretty basic set of tools, I was hoping that I could begin by getting a some help as to what scissors I should buy? I currently have a large pair and a small pair, but they are just spares that my wife had laying around the house.

Thank You!
Gary (In Canada)

:welcome1: to the forum! Post some pics of what you have built.

As far as scissors, get very sharp ones! I don't know if you have a Michael's Craft Stores, but any craft store would have nice sets. You will also need Ex-acto, or other blade type cutting knife. A paper cutting mat will save you money on the blades, and UHU glues is lignen free, so it will not yellow over time. :)

Welcome to the forum.

Here is a thread that talks about scissors and other tools of the craft:

Here is a chart that shows some of the tools and how to use them:

I hope that this helps.

Thanks for the help!

Zathros, Thank you for your post, we do have Michael's Craft Stores, and I am currently using an e-xacto knife, and cutting mat. I appreciate the the tip on UHU glue as well.

I will post some photos, once I can get my son to use his digital camera to take a couple of photos.

Rhaven Blaack, thank you for the link to the thread, and the chart, I have taken a copy of it and printed it as well. I am now going to work my way through the "Tool of the Trade" thread.

Once Again, all help is always greatly appreciated.

MacSongLi.

In the U.S., Michael's gives me all the leftover poster board, as they can't sell it. I showed a ship model I made, to the manager, and when he saw what I was using it for, he gave me around 10 lbs. of the most high quality 1 mm stock, some pieces as big as 2 feet by 2 feet! Great for bulkheads or formers. I don't even know where you can buy stuff like that. Ask, and have a model in hand to show him, and they may give you a bundle. They didn't charge me a dime! :)

hey mac i noticed one thing that helped me was a rotary cutter and one with spurs especially when cutting the folds it will eliminate hours of punching individual slots good luck

I'm going to go to Micheal's this weekend, so I'm going to try to see if they will give up their left over poster board.

dennybobbutt, thanks for the recommendation on a rotary cutter, along with scissors, I'm going to try one of those as well.

Thank you ALL Again!

Offer to buy it first. In the lower 50 states (USA), they are not allowed to, so they give it away, I don't know if that is the same in Canada, but I bet they would give it to you for a real good price, especially if you have a carriage full of stuff you are buying! :)
