Flower class corvette from Oliver Bizer

Hello,
I am now starting a small Flower class corvette model. This is model 9 here:
http://olli.maquettes-papier.net/index.php?pages/Mini-Models-Series a password is required for the pdf, you can get the password by becoming a member of Oliver's forum which unfortunately is in German which may make things difficult. Alternatively he has no problem with english and if you request the password by mail nicely he will probably give it to you.
In any case I have a few pictures of my progress to share.
One note is that the model does not include a bottom for the hull which makes it difficult for the shape of the front half of the bottom of the hull to be nice
Another note is that I used 2 kind of cardboard to thicken the deck. One is from a calendar, bristol like, very nice but really hard to cut. the other is corrugated (I think that is the correct name) cardboard as found in brown boxes used for packing. Which is easy to cut but hard to control the thickness. None of them is satisfying

here I am working on the deckhouse and chimney. Based on the remarks above I am now using depron foam for thickening. It works much better. It can be sanded when slightly too thick and cut precisely. Also of note the technic used on the chimney to remove the tab. This was explained to me by Zathros. The step that you can see has a roll of paper same length as the chimney inserted in it. Next step I glue it to the chimney and to itself and then I have a nice thick border for gluing to the chimney top and to the roof of the deckhouse

Ollie has some excellent models and a unique style. They're great!! Great build. :)

The ship is done. Compared to Olli's template I have added the rigging used to hold the radio antenna mast.
Now I have to finish the diorama

Nice looking ship and great build. Great size, you can have a whole fleet without having to move out of your home! :)

Sometimes, metal wire works better. Guitar strings work, for instance. You can also make the strings taut by applying glue to them (crazy glue works great). I think if you could find a guitar string you would get better luck. All wires sage a bit, even on these ships. When I used to sail a 10 meter boat, the main stay wires would go slack on the side opposite of the wind. :)

That's it the diorama is finished. I'll probably take a few better picture with a white background and some other lighting. But here are the first one direct from the cutting mat.

The effect of the whole diorama is excellent. It would be interesting to see it from different close perspective angles, with different lighting schemes. You could go from a real looking, to an anime, 3d looking series of pictures with the tweak of a few camera settings. Ollie would be proud to see this. Really nice.:thumb:

Well, you did a fantastic job, and to be honest, all your models are very well built. Do you design? If you don't, I would bet you would make a great designer. :)

I designed the very simple corsairs for man o' war which you have uploaded and intend to do more, but before designing I want to practice a bit more on models by different designers to learn more technics (both building and designing).

That is a good looking ship. You did a GREAT job on it. I like the diorama as well (I just wish I could see a little more of the diorama as well).

I have to agree with Zathros, so far your builds just keep getting better and better. It seems like only last month that you joined Zealot and said you had recently picked up paper modeling :p, but your modeling skills seem to have bypassed us normal folk. You are becoming a force to be reckoned with.

Bravo!

and yet I am not finished with my first medium size paper model, the "going merry". Every time I make some progress on that one I fill the urge to do another small model which takes only a few days.

:mrgreen: I know what you mean! I've kinda stalled on my Jedi Starfighters, but started Kooklik's Uboot and am researching/developing interior and torpedo models for Uhu's U-96. Go figure!sign1
