new project man o' war fleets

Hello,
I am completing my fleets of man o' war ships (hopefully someone knows what it is, it's an old out of print games workshop game of naval battles)
I am currently working on bretonnians, I started with a template I found here:

http://www.mapsandmoreshop.de/mow/

for bucanneers then I designed my own template for corsairs (2 masts square rigged ships) which I am still tweaking.

I would like to have any tips that you may have about the template (attached) as this is my first design and only the second paper model I ever built

Very nice. It looks simple and elegant. If you could fit the body and sails together on a half of a page you could fit two ships on one sheet. Also show there the length and shape of the masts as now we can only guess it from your picture.

There's no triangle sail in your prototype pdf, and you could add the banners too.

Hello,
thanks for the feedback. Yes in fact I normally have 2 hulls on one card, no explanations, no sails or banner. The sales or banners are readily available on the internet but I felt that for posting it was best to add them to the file. In any case you would want to use card for the hull and paper for the sails so the design in one sheet is not good, I should have a 2 page pdf (still to do). Also completely correct about the mast suggestion, I'll update the template either tonight or tomorrow morning.

The triangular sail was a late addition I just cut a square one...

One more thing which it could benefit from would be better coloring, but since it is very small I find that the result is pleasant.

in between building the storm raven while parts dry made a base form my corsair prototype 4 This is using the 3mm foam board I just got my hands on

I love these types of ships. I'm particularly interested in your steampunk and nautilus models. Actually all of them. I've looked at your other patterns on your website. some of them are uncolored, do you have colored versions of them?

if you think about this site: http://www.mapsandmoreshop.de/mow/ it is not mine. I did find it and started building the small bretonian ships (the ones which are colored. I needed more types for my fleet but when I contacted Ralf he said that those ships were more or less one offs so he didn't have templates. Also he paints his ships so they are not colored.

This is what got me into designing my own template for the corsair (the template was attached above), and then to go into more details than Ralf with the riggings in particular.

I may end up building the ones you are interested in (the dwarves) but definitely not soon as I have first the elve ships to do. What happens is that I have a full complement of metal dwarves so I won't need them anytime soon but I am missing some elves and still one more corsair.

Also, I am trying to improve a bit on the designs from Ralf which are all around the same principle, a flat 3 piece hull and some added superstructure. My problem with that is that the flat hull doesn't look so good, on ships like the bretonnians, the front should be curved up. The elves look better but the shape of the hull does not look right either to me.

Don't be mistaken I'd be really happy to have done fleets like his. But since I am coming after I want to improve on his experience. Also I think I caught the paper modeling virus when working on these ships so now I keep trying to improve them.

This is really nice. Simple, but very effective. I used to sail a lot and if it has sails, I like it. Would it be O.K. to put this into the "Downloads" section? You can leave it in the thread as well. t would be easier for people to find. Let me know. Preferably be P.M. so I don't have a Brain fart and forget! :)

updated templates

Here are my updated templates. I fitted 3 ships on one page which should be printed on thick paper. I also put the sails and pennants on a separate page so it can be printed on regular paper.
I added few notes on the riggings as I think the method I am using needs to be described a bit but it is nowhere as good as that of warartisan (see guide in the site linked previously).
I also improved the "paint" on the ship. I found by printing at home and at work that the end color can be very different depending on printer so don't hesitate to change the colors

If you look here:

http://jleslie48.com/gmerry/cs.html

you see a technique I use in the first few pictures on how to make tiny ratlines. Make the jig out of corrugated cardboard, and then paint the strings that are raised off of the jig with pva glue. its quite painless.

nice, by the way I'll try my hand on the going merry from paper-replika when done with the storm raven and while working on the man o' war ship.
This being said your ship is much larger than mine and I am not sure how well that jig would scale (based on the cutting mat your ship seems to be about 4 by 10 cm mine are 1 by 6

my going merry ship is from ninjatoes, not paper-replika. the jig scales a good amount, its a function of the strength of the corrugated cardboard. double it up if you need to and use thicker string. Add multiple coats of pva "paint" to stiffen the rat lines. for realistic rigging. ropes should be black as in the age of sail, the rigging was always protected with tar.

Thanks for the model reference I could see it was different from the one I downloaded but not where it was from.
I'll try the ratlines next time I make a ship requiring some.
Also about the black standing rigging you are correct of course and I'm checking if I can paint of color with a sharpie in black the rigging of the corsair on which I used white thread. The other two had either black monofilament which is the correct color if hard to see or copper thread and I'll leave that one the way it is no matter how unrealistic as my kids love it (and it is a fantasy game after all)

The standing rigging was dark, but the running rigging was light as the tar would build up in blocks etc., making the rope stuck.

Yes that was mentioned in war artisan truly excellent tutorial. Another thing which applies here too is that I am building playing miniatures as opposed to accurate models which means that I want them to look nice and be sturdy but I am ready to sacrifice a little accuracy for either sturdiness or ease of building as a whole fleet is needed.

What is funny is that I never expected to learn much when I started this project but I ended up researching information on historic ships and learning terms both in French and english

hawkship POC

As mentioned previously I consider that I am done with the corsairs for now. And I am looking into the elves.
I have just finished a proof of concept for the hawkship (the template was hand drawn and just testing the structure so I don't even call it a prototype)

Attached is the result.
Conclusion: I think it doesn't look to bad (of course it is colored with felt pen, it will look much better when printed with a design) but the assembly is way to complex (I have used for a Hull a lower paper part, an upper deck and in the middle some Depron foam which was sanded to a nice gradual curve between the two then the hull sides in paper where cut out, decorated and glued on the side of the Depron). This is a small ship which should be the bulk of an elf fleet and it should be easier to build so I'll have to find a simpler alternative for shaping the hull (and probably a simpler shape).

the deck, link between the hulls and the aft castle structure are meant from laminated layers of paper and that worked well so I'll keep it this way.
The front balista is made with steel and coper wire and need more work but the basic principle looks sound

The Corsair .zip file has been loaded and is ready for download through the download section. I put in a description. If you would like any changes, send me a P.M. with exactly what ou want put it there and I will do so. Great looking ships! It would be ice to see people play games like this without a computer. Thank You for you contribution. :)

I've paused a bit on the elven hawkship as I tried different technics for the little catamaran hull (the one in the picture which is 28mm long) and I haven't been satisfied with any. In the meantime I continued learning how to do riggings on small ship by building the enterprise from warartisan.com and using the various rigging technics I used with the corsair. THE good technic is definitely the one on that site. It took me forever to rig the ship my way for results which were not really pleasing as the cordage were almost invisible and it took 20mn to finish it his way.
I am posting pictures
