BSG 75 Emblem

This is a little project I started fiddling with a long time ago. Well, okay, a very long time ago. But I finally pulled it to the top of the pile and have finished a beta version at least.

Here's a shot of the finished product, and a link to the beta version for anyone that would like to test build it and give me feedback. Even if you don't want to test build it, I'd still appreciate feedback.

It took me a long time to come up with textures I liked, and while they're nowhere near perfect, they look pretty decent. I still want to find better textures for the base (a polished copper kind of color) and I may just map the gold bits in the center to one of the images I've found on the web, though none are really high resolution.

The reason I haven't just mapped it to an image is that I can't find one with even lighting. I want the model to have consistent coloring so that when it's displayed, the actual lighting illuminates it, rather than having an artificial lighting.

If you have a link to a good Gold texture, or a good polished copper please share it. I have a few more ideas as well, but I'll post those later when I get around to testing them. Whenever that is.

BSG 75 Emblem - more pics

And here are a few in progress pics....

The first three show a few stages of the assembly. The fourth is the finished product as posted above.

The fifth image shows what happened when I tried to clear coat it to make it look shinier. Oops. I forgot that I had reprinted the leaf-like part in the center and not sealed it with a fixative. Unfortunately part of it discolored badly.

You may also note some darker spots here and there on the light brown areas. I didn't have an art marker that matched closely and got a few spots when I was edge coloring. One thing I think I will do to minimize that is make the whole thing a bit bigger.

Anyway, a few comments on assembly.
Included in the pattern are 4 discs, and 4 rings. The 4 discs are to build up a solid base for the bottom layer (the coppery colored one). Each of the 4 discs (and the rings too) should be laminated up to a thickness of 1 mm. Then you stack them up and glue them, and then "skin" them with the patterned part. The four rings build up a base for the lighter brown part, which then sits atop the base. This is shown in the first picture.

The detailing in the center, and the dark brown raised bits I laminated to 2 or 3 layers of cardstock. Sorry, but I honestly don't remember. Just go with whatever looks right to you.

When cutting and laminating those center details, I found I had to cut them out, laminate to another layer, cut again, then laminate again to avoid tearing them. And use a nice sharp blade! I've included extra pieces in the pattern in case of accidents.

Enjoy, and share pics if you make it.

Steve

Steve, This looks really good. I have downloaded it and testing it right now. I will start another thread to show how it turns out for me.

Thank you for this really nice emblem.

This is definitely going to take off. A bunch of coats of clear coat and I bet it will look super shiny and official! :)

Steve,

Thank you once again for this really nice (and easy to build) emblem.
It only took me a few hours to make it.
Everything was very straight forward.
I am thinking about making it into a stand for a Viper or the Galactica.
This would also be good on a 3-D wall plaque with rank insignia, some medals and a blaster.

Awesome RB - Your build looks even better than mine. Thanks for posting the picture. How do you like the size?

I never thought about using it as a stand, but that's a great idea. I could even make a smaller one with fewer parts, putting more of the details in the textures. It could be used for adorning a custom stand.

I'm glad people are enjoying this little trinket. I figured it would be a hit.

Regards,

Steve

Thank you for the compliment. I do have to say though, I did not laminate the parts to the 1mm card like I was suppose to. For some stupid reason, I overlooked that step.
The size is fine for the detail. If you made it any smaller, you would have to make the center pieces into the texuring.

I did find another one though that has a little more detail.

The way that it is designed, someone could even turn it into a cool clock.

Hi, Steve! Great work there! A few years ago I made a vectorised version of the BSG75 logo and adapted it to serve as an additional numberplate for the Landram. I used a different text though to get an emblem of the factory that produces the Rams. When RB told me about your thread (thanks, ol' buddy!) I edited the old file and added the original text again. I know the BSG75 is upside down but rotating it is a piece of cake (just had no time at the moment). It's a vector image, that means it can be rescaled easily without losing quality. It is always crisp and clean and can be edited in a flash (e. g. colour change, detail work). Would this be of any help to you?

And if you want it shiny: What about using metallic coloured cardboard or a finish with metallic colours?

To RB: Awesome build, too! The clock idea is great, and I am sure some people will actually do it!

Cool! Thanks RF. I'll see if it can be useful.

As for using metallic paper etc I was thinking the same things. I would like to come up with better textures for the model just to make it a little better. For myself I've been thinking of spray painting, hand coloring with metallic markers (if I can find the right colors) and I've also got some embossing powders that seem to match the colors really well, but I haven't experimented with them yet. Too many projects, too little time.

Thanks for that image RB - It's quite different that any of the ones I've seen so far, but there's some good elements in there that might help me a lot.

Thoughts?

Hi gang.

I've been fiddling with textures a bit and have come up with some I like better. Below is a render of the original and the new. What do you think?

With a couple coats of clear coat it should look excellent, and if anyone wants to be really fancy they could print it on different papers, paint it, or whatever.

If anyone is interested in experimenting I could publish a white version as well, with separate lettering to be used as a stencil, applique, or something.

This is awesome. I have some brass somewhere, I'm tempted to make some real ones. The Brass I have s kind of thick but it would make a great template for a layered up metal one.!

That would be fantastic. I've often thought about making one out of wood (I don't really have the tools for that kind of metal working) and using some of the great spray paints you can find these days. Many even spray on with a texture. It's the lettering that gives me pause for thought. I suppose I could do up a stencil or something. Hmmmmm.

Oh well, I'll stick with the paper one for now.

Hey gang. The final version of the BSG 75 emblem is now available on my web site. I've updated the gold color as posted above and published a new PDF. The link to the beta version above is now broken (I can't edit it now).

Regards,

Steve
