Valley of the Wind Gunship - Reverse Engineering Project

ARMORMAN

FOUNDATION CORNERSTONE
Hey all, a quick weekend project:

I had seen pics floating through the web of a paper model of the Nausicca: Valley of the Wind Gunship that was some sort of premium about 20 years ago. Well, after doing some searching, the best I could find was some photos some people had taken for some japanese auction sites. I was able to find between different posts a full set of pictures of the model parts (albeit distorted and rather small). So I took what I had, adjusted the distortion, resized the image, traced/modified the parts and produced what you see below:

That's extremely well done, impressive.

I don't know if it's of any assistance to you, but on the off-chance that you might be looking to tweak what you have, the following may be of assistance.

There's another one from that anime that I've long wanted a model of which has articulated wings and just looks so cool, but I suspect that it might be a tad beyond this medium.

If you are patient, most anything can be made with paper.....

If I do decide to do anything, I will probably redesign from scratch. I just wanted to see if I could make a build-able model off found photos on the internet...

I've never heard of anyone reconstructing an out of print kit like this. Seems like quite an achievement!

It took knowledge of the original craft, and ARMORMAN is a bastions of knowledge, so I have come to expect this kind of act from him.

This in no way takes away the cool factor though!! :)

[ i would like to see it with your special custom directions that you do. you know what I speak of, a,k,a, "Talon".:inw:

I remember watching Nausicca when it first came out (We happened to be in Japan, and even though i didn't understand it, I watched it filling in my own dialog :)

I have the English dubbed version, and enjoy watching it with my Son. it's his favorite Anime (followed closely by ed, edd, and eddy, go figure.)

I would Love to be able to build this with my son. I will be watching this intently :)

Nausicaa has always been a favourite of mine. I didn't know something like a model of the gunship existed. That Japanese booklet/model looks incredibly old.

It would be wonderful to see a project of it developed. :)

According to another member on a different forum, the original was an insert in a 1982 issue of Animage (ahh...the days of cool inserts, cool cereal premiums, and cool toys in Cracker Jacks).

Interesting.

If it is from 1982 then it corresponds to the year Nausicaa was first serialized in manga format in the Animage magazine. The first chapter was published on February 1982 in that magazine.

The Nausicaa movie was released in 1984. So the insert has direct relationship with the manga version, not the movie.
:)
