I'm currently working on Leo Cherkashyn's 1/100 Buran/Energia, and am interested in scratchbuilding the "Grasshopper", the horizontal transporter it was assembled on. Leo's got some other transporters on his site, and I'd like to display my Buran horizontally. Just wondering if anyone else out there has tried this one. I've never totally scratchbuilt a model before.

Thanks for your reply. I've already been to this site, and downloaded some of the best views. I'm drawing it in Autocad. This is going to be a big project, I hope I have the time and patience to finish it.

That will be very interesting to watch. Please make a build post and post many pictures and show the methods that you use. It could be very informative. Thanks! :)

At this point I'm still downloading pics and trying to scale them to the Energia. I work 3 jobs, so this is going to take me a long time.

Testing photo download Buran-Ener on transporter.jpg
This is the Buran/Energia, mounted on the Grasshopper transporter. It required four locomotives to move from the assembly bldg. to the launch pad.

One thing I'm a little confused about, there are many photos of Buran/Energia on Grasshopper, in some pics the Grasshopper is green and some it's battleship grey. I know there are two Grasshoppers, both are grey (and rust) now. The grasshoppers were originally built for the Moon Rocket, and reconfigured for Buran. They were green during the Moon Rocket program, so I assume it was green during the test fittings, and painted grey before the real flight. Personally I like grey, but I want it in whatever color it was on the day of the real flight. I made a few inquiries to Russian aerospace companies, but got no reply (maybe because I wrote in English?). Anyone have any information about this?

You may have more knowledge than anyone I know of. I like the grey also. Green never looks right on models for some reason, to me anyways. Maybe it was a zinc chromate primer they used?

Update: Color question answered

I went to Youtube, and found there are lots of Buran videos. Most are of the launch, the landing, or the building collapse which destroyed the orbiter. But I found one which shows the transport to the pad and the Grasshopper standing up. At the time of the launch, the Grasshopper was grey, so that's what the model will be.

My goal is to make my Grasshopper able to stand up or recline. The really difficult part is determining how all those hydraulic rams work together with the girders to tilt the cradle. Leo's transporter has a hydraulic ram, which I downloaded and built so I could understand how it works.

Leo kindly gave me permission to copy his rail trucks for my Grasshopper. It makes sense to do this, since it's the same launch facility and the same approximate time period, so they are going to be very similar, if not identical. The Grasshopper has 32 rail wheel trucks, with 4 wheels each.

:steamtrain: Add the locomotives, and that's a lot of wheels to make.

This project is really 8 separate models coming together: Buran (which is finished), Energia (which is almost finished), the Grasshopper, four locomotives, and the display base. When finished, the full display will be about 3 1/2 feet (1 1/4 meters) long. My wife is being very tolerant of this, which I appreciate. Of course, I plan to display it in my office, not at home, which does not bother her one bit.

Another interesting thing about the Youtube videos. One of them was a Soviet propaganda movie, which shows Buran launching cruise missiles from it's payload bay, which proceed to strike several major American cities. I never thought of Buran, or the American shuttles, being used as long-range bomber platforms, but apparently someone was.

I always thought a cool fantasy model would be the ISS with Buran and an American shuttle both docked at it. But one project at a time.

Now that's just plain scary!!! Maybe you could post a ink to the video ( you can actually post the video in the advanced mode. I'd like to see that, and cringe for a while.

You can imbed videos from YouTube on this forum. Just go to the advanced mode and follow the instructions in my signature. And yes, they had some scary plans, so do we! Let's hope they are just flights of fancy. :)

Progress update: Not much. I have been working on the model in Autocad during my lunch breaks at work. But I often work through lunch, so progress is slow. At home, I have been working up dimensions for the hydraulic lifter assemblies. Also printed up the wheel trucks, but have decided to finish the Energia before starting the Grasshopper. Makes sense to have that completed to ensure the Grasshopper fits right.
Will send pics when Energia is done. By then, maybe have some Autocad plots too.
